I just read a very long post of someone's point of view about Philly.
He said it was crime-ridden, racist and dirty. He also said people were not "laid-back" but lazy and unfriendly and cliquish.
Now I dont know if I should come and look at it.
He was given 12 thumbs up for his post--on Sperlings Best Places to Live.
Is he right??

After my morning's commute of one hour and 25 minutes to travel 13 miles -- a usual trip of about 35 minutes -- I'm inclined to say yes.

But don't mind me this morning. Stupid drivers make me crabby.

I think Philadelphia is one of the top 5 cities in the United States. Don't believe everything you read, every major city has good and bad areas and Philadelphia is no different. Come visit as see everything Philly has to offer, you wont be disappointed.

Crime-ridden? - a number of parts are; the good parts are not

Racist? - parts are, but overall I don't think it is really racist compared to most other cities (probably a bit less so if anything)

Dirty? - Philadelphia does have too few public garbage cans; I wouldn't call it dirty per say but the nickname Philthadelphia isn't totally without merit

Not laid-back? - that's definitely true, Philly natives are generally on the intense side (it's a Northeast, big city thing)

Lazy? - I don't think that's the case

Unfriendly? - people won't say hi to you when you're walking down the street but people will help you if you ask for directions or stuff like that

Cliquish? - possibly yes in the sense that the many natives have their own way of doing things and can be a little slow to warm up to outsiders, definitely not if meant to imply pretentiousness

"Not laid-back" AND "lazy"??? I would think it would be one or the other.

As someone who intends to move to metro Philadelphia (and has visited multiple times), I feel metro Philadelphia is definitely worth looking into / visiting to get a feel / etc. Center City is lively, and has a true city feel (if you are coming from the sunbelt, that is refreshing!).

There probably may be cliquish / unfriendly people (some of the natives?), but as a transplant, you will likely be in a different social setting. The one stranger I asked direction questions in Center City was very helpful with my questions.

Yes, we're a bunch of dirty, uptight racists, who hate everyone. Everything on the internet is true. Yawn.

No, Philly is a great city. We just moved here from Mass and love it. There are some extremely poor, dangerous, and segregated ghettos, but you wouldn't go there unless you wanted to. We wanted something urban, historic, and densely populated with great sports, shopping, and reasonable real estate prices (compared to Boston). You don't have to go too far outside the city to find gorgeous rolling hills and farms. My one major issue so far is the transportation system and infrastructure seems pretty poorly designed for the high population of the Philly metro area. The roads, commuter rail, and subway system are lacking. We are lucky enough to live right on the R5 to get into the city.
