So recently, AOL News posted that a Philadelphia neighborhood, bounded by Green Street to the south, Poplar to the north, Broad Street to the west, and 10th Street to the east to be the 6th most dangerous in the United States- which is pretty unbelievable if you are familiar with the area, lined with slightly smaller replications of suburban McMansions, built to replace a crappy public housing project called the Allen Homes in the 90s. The residents are not all the same, with many of the houses being privately owned.

What concerns me the most is that this might lend a bad name to the neighborhoods bordering it- Northern Liberties to the West, Francisville, to the East, but also Spring Garden south of Wallace (which is actually north of Green). The blocks north of Spring garden, between broad and 9th, have seen so much development and new business in recent years- one of my best friend from Penn moved back into her familial home their after graduating- and believe me, it is far from terrifying, with its 1820s and 1830 stately rowhomes and hipsters. Is anyone else familiar with the neighborhood on this forum that can corroberate how nice these blocks are? Think about the beer's you've had at the upscale pub "The Institute", or the times you ate at "Root" or "Sazon"...

People forget this is what Northern Liberties looked like in 1999.

Is AOL still around? When was this article posted, the 90's? Even then, that part of the city was never the worst in the area.

Your directions are a tad off...Northern Liberties would be to the east of the area in question. Francisville would be to the west.

BTW, here's the article PennKid was referring to:

I won't take anything on AOL news seriously. The people reading that are not the people you want to attract to the city anyway.

Also, even though the little map only seemed to be highlighting the bit around the projects, I still find those numbers strange. I never felt that area to be cozy by any means, but I never had problems biking through there, even late at night. It must mainly be inter-project shenanigans I guess. I don't understand how that neighborhood is the 6th most dangerous in the nation, but other far far faaaaaaaaaar worse hoods in Philly were completely omitted.

Yeah, I can't take that list seriously.

edit: I read the comment section at the bottom, and now I need to take a shower.

it really makes you wonder as to the quality of these lists. I'd be surprised if it's the 6th most dangerous in Philly let alone the country.

Sorry, you're right, I got them mixed up, and I think I made the title "Spring Garden west of Broad when I meant east of Broad.

I was just trippin'
