I have to move to Center City in a few years and I'm scared. I suggest moving to the suburbs near the city. I live in New Jersey and it is a very safe area.
I dont think you read their post at all.

I grew up in the Temple University area, and I almost lost my life in that neighborhood. I would suggest stay on the main street which is Broad street, and at night time try to be with a large diverse group...... People select their targets.

And like Marius said above, if you plan to live off campus you don't have to live in north Philly, Septa is awesome. You could live in the upper northeast for the same price as living around the Temple campus and its much safer.

Hi I m vipin,
I just came from Temple university, it is very horrible to say but the campus is not safe, surrounding area around the campus is worst in safety. My daughter and her two freidns, (attending Temple under graduate), were walking to her class 11:30AM on very first day. The weather was perfect, bright sunny and not so hot/cold. Suddenly some young man in early 20s came running, with left arm grip arround my daughter's neck, he tried to snatch away new I phone she bought around 1 week before. When she resisted to let phone go the guy punched three to four time on her face and stomack. She screemed for help. Because of the punches on face my daughter lost grip on cell phone and the guy ran away with the cell phone. There were many people arround non came for help. Two of her friend couldnot do much but they called 911. Police came 10min later after the guy ran away. It is very bad campus. I would recommand to study some were else if you like to sleep piecefully at night.

...I attend Temple and haven't heard a peep about this, granted I do not live on campus, but I know many who do. Aside from this and the fact that you have one post and there's been a pattern of recently made accounts spouting nonsense about Philly lately, I checked the Crime Log that Campus Security keeps. The only thing that even corresponds with your time is listed as "Criminal Mischief at 11:04 am" on the 31st of August. This is obviously not the crime you're describing, and it happened inside of a residence hall.

OP, the neighborhood around Temple has a very real crime problem, make no mistake - but, as a female, I feel safe on campus(I really advise staying on campus and out of that neighborhood until you get your bearings, however, there are students everywhere living on and just off of the campus without issue), the police presence is very strong, and you are unlikely to run into any trouble - just like the thousands of other students that mill around that area.

The only reason I would suggest living in the dorms(I never did), is because you kind of develop an instant social circle. I knew people in the city already, and ended up rooming with friends who were going to other schools. Temple is a big school, and the student body lives all over Philly. I now live in University City and take public transportation. In the past when I was in a different 'hood, I'd take the Broad Street Line(Regularly at night because of my ridiculous schedule and extracurricular) - I never felt unsafe, and if worst came to worst I'd usually figure out if anyone in the class I was in was hopping on the subway(someone almost always is), and buddy up. The one safety tip I learned about waiting for public transportation was not to hover around the platform unless there was a fairly sizeable group. If it's only you and one or two other dudes, wait upstairs by the attendent until the train comes. You'll be fine.

Yep - Temple has an alert system (emails, texts, phone alerts), there was no mention of any attacks on TU students this past week. It seems to me the students on TU's campus feel pretty safe. I wish more would practice a bit more common sense and would refrain from walking with their iPod's on (ear buds) in when they're off-campus, or immersed in their text-messages/ phone calls - completely aloof to what's going no around them. But statistically the likelihood of being a victim of an attack is low, when you consider how many faculty, staff, and students are on this campus each day and how many attacks occur in given semester.

I commute to Temple on the railroad from Chestnut Hill almost every day. The short walk from the railroad station to the campus is absolutely fine. It's residential, there is always security, and it is well-lit at night.

People who post on here crack me up. People who put down Philadelphia are usually not from here and have no idea what they are talking about and they're living in the past. Since 2000 Philadelphia has been on a rapid recovery from the white flight seen in the 60's and 70's. It's not the city it used to be and is much safer. I am a current student at Temple University and have NEVER had a problem or heard of any friends having a problem. The only people who have SERIOUS problems are those who live in the bad areas (Northeast of Campus). Anywhere in the vicinity of Diamond to the north to Masters to the south and from 18th Street to the west to the Septa Regional rail tracks to the east you will be fine. Don't listen to anyone who doesnt live here. Yes there are robberies from time to time but name anywhere that a robbery doesn't happen...

My parents live in Bucks County which is one of the wealthiest counties in PA and they have had several robberies around there. Robberies can happen anywhere ESPECIALLY in a large city where someone isn't using common sense. The immediate area around campus is filled with students.

Although if you do plan to come to Temple and live here, NEVER go passed 18th street to the west and NEVER go Northeast of Campus, unless you are going to Park Ave. which is a large party street at Temple and filled with students.

I take it you don't live in either Trenton or Camden, NJ.

If you haven't heard of anyone having a problem at temple you must not talk to many people on campus, or they aren't telling you things that have happened. I spend a lot of time in the city, i'm from delco, and I am on Temple's campus a lot. Last year 3 houses got there doors kicked in and robbed all on the same block, the same day, back to back to back. My buddy has had a knife pulled on him. A kid was shot and killed on camac street not too long ago.

Make no mistake it is a rough neighborhood, and even if you use street smarts it is unpredictable of when you are going to be a victim of a thug trying to get over on you. They know you have money, they know your not from the city, so to some of them you may be a target.

Lol, last time I was at Temple I got offered dope by a guy walking down the block. I don't feel unsafe in that neighborhood because I've been there many times, know my way around, and don't bother people.

My main point - people are people, and not EVERYONE in that neighborhood is going to, or wants to rob you and beat you up. if you mind your own business, you should be okay. You are in a run down drug infested neighborhood, ACT ACCORDINGLY.

Camac is northeast of campus... like I said before that's not a place you want to be. Also, the kid who was shot was not from Temple and tried fighting a guy who pointed a gun at his face. Most of the students live either on campus or in between diamond to jefferson, 18th to broad. In that area MOST students don't have any problems. And there is virtually no problems on campus. The only students who have problems are the ones who live northeast of campus or outside of the area I mentioned.
