Okay, your point is well taken.

Philly is a great town for exploring historic cemeteries that are full of fantastic statuary, obelisks, mausoleum architecture ... Laurel Hill Cemetery and The Woodlands come to mind. They are free and there is free parking nearby. A great place for a picnic in nice weather.

I like a small very modest cemetery in Fishtown called "Palmer Street Cemetery" by the locals. Apparently if you live in Fishtown you can get buried here at little or no cost (correct me if I'm wrong). This being a poorer neighborhood, many of the grave markers are hand-made out of a piece of wood. Some of the graves are decorated with dollar store trinkets. There is something so touching about this place.

It's pretty extensive - comparable to the skyway system in Minneaoplis, of which nobody can get enough of - and I had never really heard about it, probably because so much of it is old and smelly.

It's probably best kept a secret anyway, though.

this is amazing

Default In my neck o' the woods ...

Here are some interesting things to do near where I live (University City) ...

1. Take a stroll around the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. Admire the "Collegiate Gothic" architecture, have someone take a picture of you sitting next to the bronze Ben Franklin on a park bench. Visit the Penn Museum (the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology and Anthropology). Browse in the University Bookstore on Walnut Street.

2. Walk around the Spruce Hill neighborhood of University City and observe all the different kinds of Victorian 19th Century residential architecture: Queen Anne, Italianate, Second Empire, Netherlandish Revival and Eclectic, American Arts And Crafts, etc. Woodland Terrace and the 4200 block Pine Street are especially pretty. You'll also see some lovely front yard gardens with amazing old heirloom roses in bloom this time of year.

3. Have lunch at an ethnic restaurant on Baltimore Ave: Ethiopian at Dahlak, Vietnamese at the Vietnam Cafe, Indian at Desi Village, Laotian at Vientiane, brick oven pizza at the Dock Street Brewery, or good American fare at The Gold Standard Cafe.

until a yr or two ago, it was just a space wedged in between a bunch of major roads where homeless people could sleep. with the renovation they just did, it is now a great place to go with your kids. philly never seemed to have enough playgrounds so it's good they put one in there.
