Philly is Philly. Nothing comes close. Especially when it comes to the Majors.

Remember when Philadelphia was that quaint town sitting on the other side of the Turnpike, non-threatening the way a younger cousin is non-threatening?

Read more: ...Now Philadelphia is Michael Corleone, underestimated for so long, who in December came out of the bathroom blasting away and hustled Cliff Lee away from the Yankees, who yesterday announced it had “settled all family business” by getting Nnamdi Asomugha to sign his mellifluous collection of vowels and consonants to the bottom of a contract, stealing him clear away from the Jets.
It caps four years of relentless smackdowns and beatdowns (save for the Yankees’ defiant refusal to let the Phillies repeat in 2009), which began in ’07 when the Phillies erased a 71⁄2-game Mets lead in the NL East in the bare space of 17 days, which continued on the last day of the 2010 NHL season when the Flyers beat the Rangers for the last spot in that season’s playoffs, which raged out of control when the Eagles made that impossible comeback on the Giants last season at the Meadowlands.
The perverse beauty of the Asomugha deal, of course, is the same thing that made the Lee signing so delicious for Philly. Not only did Philly outwit and outmaneuver the big wallets of New York and the big swagger of Dallas both times, but by adding both the star southpaw and the standout corner it not only hurt the New York team they beat directly for their services — the Yankees and the Jets — it also badly battered the other teams in town — the Mets and the Giants — who now have to deal with monsters inside their own divisions for years to come.

OK, I'm approaching this as someone who lives in Atlanta.

What innovation started in Philly? If anything we look to the West Coast for innovation.

And from my perspective in Atlanta, we don't look to Philly as the cultural center of America. Definitely New York City is the cultural center.

Philly doesn't mean much of anything in the mind of Americans other than its Colonial past and sports teams. Philadelphia hasn't been of much interest or influence since the writing of the Constitution.

More to the point, is Philly THE place where innovation starts? A lot of places can talk up what was created there. We're not exactly waiting on the next innovation that comes out of Philly. Philly is nothing special.

Besides, the history of the computer is a bit vague. ENIAC is considered as the first electronic computer. But Philly is certainly not the center of computer technology today. Silicon Valley is on the West Coast.

ah the roaming philly hater. you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. I can see saying Philadelphia's prominence is weak today, but since the constitution? you show you're ignorance in plain view.

Later, Piasecki designed the first tandem twin-rotor helicopter which could lift substantial loads and in 1947 started the Piasecki Helicopter Corporation to manufacture this helicopter. In 1955, he sold his interest in the corporation and it later became part of Boeing which still manufactures helicopters in Philadelphia. Further development of Piasecki’s tandem rotor technology led to the CH46-Sea Knight (assault and medium transport) and CH47-Chinook (multi-role heavy transport) helicopters.
