Ok, LOL

I will keep that in mind...

My hubby is not going to be able to work in NJ because in his field he would have to be an attorney for that (Title Insurance)....this would suck royally as you can imagine...

I bookmarked this page:
Arts and Entertainment | Collingswood, New Jersey
I am sure we would want to see all that.....Looks really nice...I have so much to do and see once we get up there, I don't think we would be home much.......LOLOL

As far as wage taxes, what are they going for? Public Transit? Medicare? Education? Children Services? in Florida they don't have any and it shows.....I am aware of wage taxes from when I was working in Europe, we have a lot of that there, but at the same time, we have better benefits by comparison to here where in 10 years we were not able to afford health care!? In Florida they have LARGE/Huge property taxes that "supposedly" goes for the schools in the area you live in, but I don't see it as the schools here can't even hire qualified teachers to deal with Special Needs, so I see it as a waste....where we live (we rent, luckily) but they charge from $8000 to $20,000 and up for property taxes, another $2000 for CDD (Community development) plus HOAs and homeowners insurance....by the time you're done, you have $20 bucks left! not to mention maintenance....I am still wondering how this because a "Dream".....LOL

Also, the parking in Philly is horrible; you get 8 mins for 25 cents at a meter kiosk and the PPA will be on you in a second. The arts areas in the city are limited to center city but they are abundent. Just a last ditch...Collingswood has multiple arts crawls, festivals and 2 galleries right in town. There. I'm done!

NJ has very high income taxes, if someone is to live in the suburbs, it makes little sense to pay their outsized income and property taxes. just live in the PA suburbs. people who live in the city rents spaces in a garage or have permit parking, they don't simply feed the meter. there's no need to drive if you live within walking sitance. arts crawls and festivals are a dime a dozen, they simply got the idea of old city anyway

It's the second consecutive year New Jersey has finished dead last, according to the 2010 State Business Tax Climate Index released this week

Philadelphia's SEPTA system offers weekly and monthly passes priced per "zone".

The Trailpass is good for any transportation - commuter train, subway, elevated "El" train, light rail "trolley" and bus - up to the zone that you have purchased.

SEPTA | Trailpass

The Transpass is good for any bus, "El" train, subway, or trolley within the city limits as well as the commuter rail within the city outside of rush hour.

SEPTA | TransPass

Each pass is good throughout the whole system on weekends.

The rules can be a bit confusing if you were to take any of the "100" trains (#100, 101 or 102) but we can worry about that if you choose to live in any of those areas.

Considered one of the very best in Philly:

Penn Sadie Alexander School (Locust St. and 43rd) - it is partially subsidized by the University of Pennsylvania. You must live in the "catchment area" however - the Spruce Hill neighborhood of University City, roughly 38th to 48th streets east to west, Walnut St to Chester Ave. north to south.

University City is very convenient to Center City and all it's galleries, museums, restaurants, etc.

The OP plans to rent wherever they go; therefore, they will not be subject to NJ's property tax. The area of west Philly you mention is certainly improved but I would not choose to live there due to the (very) limited area that once can move about due to crime. This is amplified in summer when colleges are out and the city is empty. I gew up in S. Philly and I know the area well. car break ins for junkie change is a daily event.

the OP also said they wanted to live in the city. nj still has higher taxes on income. if the OP chooses to live in the suburbs, it easily makes more sense to choose the PA side.

Chestnut Hill is a walkable neighborhood in Philadelphia. It's not downtown, but there are many things the neighborhood has to offer. There are two train lines, buses and a number of Philly Car Share locations. The zip code is 19118.

For rentals check Craigslist, Reatlor dot com and the Chestnut Hill Local

There are a number of school options in the area. If you are looking for a public school the local one is J.S. Jenks (http://www.phila.k12.pa.us/schools/jsjenks/about.htm - broken link)

Good luck on your journey!
