My sister just moved to Philadelphia. We've been going there for years but I wanted to get her a book about the best things to do in the city. She's 23, interested in museums, shopping and enjoying the nightlife and needs to get to know the city better (as a resident). Any suggestions? I heard about Not for Tourists - Philadelphia guide book. Has anyone used that?

lots of guidebooks out there, but you can start off with following some of the main blogs and city news papers to get an idea of cultural events, restaurant openings, what's hot, what's not, etc. For those purposes, I recommend:

philly.com
philadelphiaspeaks.com
foobooz
philebrity
redbricker
citypaper.net
philadelphiaweekly.com

for major highlights and getting to know the city, just check out:

visitphilly.com

that should give anyone a good overview of Philly, as a resident, tourist, or prospective resident/tourist.

I wouldn't recomend nft. fodor's is probably the best and has actual philly residents writing it. those other sites would be good for questions and general news.

don't forget septa.org for getting to know the regional public transit... Philly's got more than one way to get you around town: trolleys, trolleybuses, subway, regional rail, buses... if she is living in or near center city or near a rail line, she might not even need a car... related to that, she may want to check out phillycarshare.org and zipcar.com which are the two car-sharing services in town which make it possible to not own a car but have the use of one if you need it almost anytime.

also, just go to the Independence Visitor Center-- they have a lot of information about the city and the region, and it is free.

W came upon an Insider's Guide: Off the Beaten Path Philadelphia written by Karen Ivory when we thinking of moving here. It's much less a tourist guide book but more an excellent resident's resource. She takes the entire city (from the airport to Northeast Philly - not just Center City) neighborhood-by-neighborhood, pointing out architecture, museums, markets and local restaurants and byob's.
