My husband is being relocated to Philly--What's a decent area to move to with good schools and affordable real estate? We've been looking online at houses in Montgomery County (Pottstown) My husband can drive up to 40-45 miles each way. Thanks for any advice!!!

You can tell you used to live rural!!! 40-45 miles a day down here is going to take him forever to get to work if he's heading towards the city. Montco and Bucks are good, but parts of them are very pricey. Whatever you do, DO NOT move into the City! Only those of us who can't afford to move or have elderly relatives we need to be near, and the drug dealers and murderers, are left!

If you want a midpriced suburb, try Rockledge. It's right on the border of Fox Chase in Philly, one of the last bastions of civility left here. There are many small towns in Bucks and Chester that appear depressed, but are really pleasant little paces, where you might be able to find something affordable. And there might be some people along the river willing to give you a deal, if you don't mind making sure your family can all swim.

That's ridiculous. I live in center city and I love it. There are other parts of Philly that are fine. There is nothing that bothers me more than a Philadelphian who puts down our city.

Why don't you look in South Jersey like Cherry Hill or Washington Township both have great schools and it is only a 30 minute commute to Philly

Good schools- than I suggest right outside of Philly, not in Philly. Yes, a Philadelphia (ex now though) putting down her city, but as an ex-Philly teacher, I have the right to put down the schools. If you research the Philly schools online-they leave much to be desired. The only schools worth putting your child in-you better live in that neighborhood. We try as teachers, but we can only do so much by ourselves; if the parents are neglecting their parental duties...the children will only go so far (of course you have the one special child here and there).

I would read the Philadelphia Daily News online so that you can read all about the crime and ongoings of our city, and heck, even check it out on city-data itself. Then, I would check the surrounding areas online. I don't want to recommend any if I don't know the crime data myself- but many many suburbs and close towns/cities will highly outbeat what Philly has to offer in the way of education, crime and violence. Why do you think I left after 32 years?
