hi all,

My husband and I are shifting to Philadelphia in a couple of weeks. His job is located in 30th Street Station,PA and he needs to be within a 20-min. commute from that location. We are looking for a safe, nice area where we can rent a 1-bedroom apt. for a year. Hopefully not too expensive, relatively urban, good access to amenities and good Indian population(optional).
Any suggestion/help will be appreciated
Thanks..

All areas in and around CC will offer good access and good urban living. For an Indian population i believe the highest concentration would be in University City which would definately be within the 20 minute commute.

Here is a link to some information on downtown Philadelphia neighborhoods.

Center City District / Central Philadelphia Development Corporation Of Philadelphia

And university city
University City District, Philadelphia, PA

you could walk there from university city, depending on where you lived, or take the subway. also, all of the commuter trains stop at 30th st station, so you could live in a town outside of the city that is along the train line. Lansdale has a large indian population i believe, and it has a train station.

The OP stated that her husband needed to be within a 20 minute commute. Lansdale to 30th St. Station generally takes about an hour.

I agree with the posters who suggested University City.

I think both CC and University City area would be good for us..
I checked the below links on Philadelphia neighborhoods and found lot of apartments.

Center City District / Central Philadelphia Development Corporation Of Philadelphia
University City District, Philadelphia, PA

On reviewing a few in "apartmentguide.com", I found most of them are not in good living conditions(lots of roaches, bugs, mice) , am really confussed...can anybody suggest me few apartment names.. pleaseeeeeee

hey Pooja, unlike Dallas area or other southern cities, Philly is not a huge apartment-community type of a city. There are several apartment high rises in downtown ("Center City") and other places, but most of the apartments in Philly are going to be smaller, private companies or landlords who convert their individual condo unit into a rental. I can understand your frustration in looking for an apartment in such a fragmented market. I would recommend checking out listings on philadelphiaweekly.com, Craigs List, citypaper.net, and a web site like 4wallsinphilly... the last one has a listing of major apartment buildings and an overall idea of different neighborhoods.

You could also try a few suburbs that I believe have Indian population; I suggest Cherry Hill, NJ and Upper Darby, PA. Actually, a few other western suburbs may also be good. Conshohoken is a major business hub so I imagine there to be many desis and some would for sure rent there. But I am myself not so familiar with places outside of the city since I live and work in center City and only moved here about a year ago from Dallas.

Good luck, and hope you like it here. If you were used to Irving, you will be in for a major shock in terms of many things... the way things look, feel, and work here are different from Texas. Also, things are more expensive here, but I'm sure you already know all this.

There are about 15+ desi restaurants in Center City and University City. And there are a couple of desi grocery stores out in University City, near 40th St and Chestnut St I believe. So you should hopefully be fine with your needs for desi food. Not a strong desi community in the city but then same is true of Dallas...desis seem to love suburbs.
