I know there are 700 threads pertaining to this but I want some information that is specific to our information. My husband works at the Philadelphia shipyard (old navy yard) in Philly. We currently live right in NJ directly over the bridge. We were looking to move in PA since my husband works in PA so we already in the city every day. We have a 3 yr old son and arent interested in the city particularly. Without really being to specific cost wise, because we havent narrowed down the exact amount we want to spend, we would like to know which areas outside of Philly that are still a reasonable commute would be nice areas to live. We would like a low crime rate and a good community feel like we have in our suburban town now. we would be renting initially until we find a house to purchase. does anyone have any advice on reasonable priced areas with decent schools?

What is "reasonable" for housing costs - and even a commute - may mean different things to different people. It would be helpful if you were able to provide a ballpark figure for both of your preferences.

There are actually a lot of nice areas in South Philly. Don't know about the public schools but there are a ton of Catholic schools because South Philly at one time had a large Italian/Italian-American population.

if you are looking at public school districts for the son. Ardmore,PA is in lower merion (#1 in the state) and is a section of the mainline with reasonably priced rental apts/houses. If you are looking south of the shipyard in delco, I would stay on the west side of I-95 from the ridley park (rt 420) exit on down to the Delaware state line (about 12 miles south of the airport) any of those neighborhoods are reasonably priced for rentals.
