This is quite disappointing.

^^^ So how many hoops do they need to go through before this occurs? In addition to L&I, isn't there some sort of historic commision permitting that needs to be cleared? I can't believe Jeweler's Row isn't already a protected historic district.

Right!? There are so many of those, and ugly parking garages, I don't understand the logic there.

The Jewelers Row project received front page billing in today's Inquirer: Toll Bros. seeks to build 16-story residential building on Jewelers Row

Hopefully this attention will generate some outrage.

What are our chances in stopping the Jewelers Row development?

Highly unlikely, its a by-right build, so Toll can basically begin whenever they want after August 26th I believe.

This type of project just shows how strong the CC real estate market is becoming if Toll wants to build a highrise, however we lose some historic character in the process.

Yes, the real state market in Philly is very clearly fully recovered and then some, but this type of project very obviously should not become the status quo for the future.

Although you're absolutely right that this is by-right, people shouldn't underestimate their ability to persuade and protest for a compromise. It would be in Toll's best interest, as it would be showing immense goodwill if it reciprocated, especially if it wants to be well-received for future projects.
