This is the finalized plan. Absolutely idiots in the comment section who probably didn’t even fill out the public survey.

Boy, isn't this long overdue? Someone is finally rethinking about the region's public transit, specifically regional rail.

The transformation of Regional Rail into a Metro-like service with frequent trains remains in an earlier planning phase than other projects. But the concept plays an integral role in the vision of a transit network that connects Philadelphians to opportunity, on their own schedule.

That would be awesome, from a selfish perspective, but do we have the ridership to justify it? Admittedly, I’ve only had the chance to quickly skim the article.

Yeah, I think it's very aspirational. Not SEPTA's forte typically, but it's very welcome.

They're definitely framing it as a longer-term vision for the region, with some optimism in mind about funding priorities from a much more transit-friendly administration (hopefully administrationS) in DC now and in the future.

Not now we don't, but:
  • The pandemic will pass eventually, and when it does, many of us work-from-homes will return to the office part-time. That will help Regional Rail ridership especially recover.
  • The buses remain the workhorses of the SEPTA system, and they're still carrying a decent number of passengers now. Making them run faster and show up more often should help ridership stabilize and even grow again.
  • The reshaping of Regional Rail to make it more like metro service should generate its own "induced demand." Lots of suburbanites would love more frequent service every bit as much as city-dwellers would love both more frequent service and fare alignment with transit.

Speaking on the bus crowding. The 47 is still absolutely packed on most days. It surprises me that they don't run articulated busses there. I honestly think that ridership would justify a subway line. The bus runs less than every 5 miuntes during rush hour but gets caught behind delivery trucks etc.

In a perfect world we'd have an 8th street and 20th street subway.

An update here, and a change of pace from the crime thread...

https://www.inquirer.com/arts/newseu...-20210318.html

"The Newseum, an interactive museum in Washington, D.C., devoted to journalism, is gone, succumbing to financial woes. It closed at the end of 2019."

"But while the building on Pennsylvania Avenue has since been sold to Johns Hopkins University, the most distinctive element from its facade — a 50-ton, 74-foot-high slab of gray Tennessee marble incised with the words of the First Amendment — will be trucked to Philadelphia’s National Constitution Center some time in the next few weeks."
