A few days ago, the Housing Authority building on Chestnut near 21st St and the adjacent parking lot were fenced off from the street. A sign for Ricco Demolition hangs on the fence. I'm wondering if work on the tower planned at that location is about to begin.

Unsure where to post this.. Seems like the city has been receiving more positive international press since becoming a "sanctuary city."

Demo is definitely moving forward, and hopefully the new building will start right away.

The old midtown II Diner at 11th & Sansom is fenced off for demo as well. The proposed project at that corner (which I hope starts right away)... https://phillyyimby.com/2022/01/19268.html

Would be great to see simultaneous movement on 2 bad looking parcels.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the block of South 11th that contains the former Midtown II, Bock Development's previously announced building slated to rise where the Wendy's used to be and wrapping around the back of two of its Walnut Street neighbors appears to be stalled. There's been no movement at all since the Wendy's was demolished.

And what really pisses one off is that they have closed the sidewalk. So they have demo'd historic buildings, pulled the plug on the project and for YEARS now, have taken away a sidewalk that appears will never function as a sidewalk again.

HOW dos the city allow this? HOW??!!

What's the consensus on the proposed arena at 10th and Market? I know people on here are pretty anti-NIMBY and generally more educated, so I'm interested in hearing the valid reasons for or against it as opposed to people parroting the same old arguments about "evil gentrification" and the "destruction of Chinatown".

I think the obvious argument in favor of it is that the mall is failing, and Macy's lease ends in 2027. Imagine east Market with no Macy's OR Fashion District. We should get ahead of that potential scenario and allow this to move forward. There is virtually no other demand for that area right now or 8th & Market and 13th & Market wouldn't be empty lots, and the south side of Market wouldn't be all dilapidated empty storefronts.

The latest arguments I'm seeing are "the 76ers could leave in 2061" (which they probably won't if they invest $1.5B in an arena tailored to their needs), "how will EMS vehicles traverse 10th and 11th if they are closed to traffic on game nights" (meanwhile plenty of pedestrian-only streets in all sorts of countries prove EMS has an easier time navigating these streets than if they are full of traffic), and people making it a class thing about "billionaires bullying immigrant communities" - I'd call this a stretch since we are talking about replacing a mall on Market St.
