An objective opinion or two (or twenty) would be helpful right now. I've been contemplating this question, and find myself going back and forth about it.

My husband and I are originally from the Doylestown area. We've lived in South Jersey for the past 15 years. (Moved because of his job.) Our kids are all in college and out of college. We will be retiring (or "rewiring" ) within the next couple of years, and have made the decision not to stay in NJ.

We have a little vacation condo in Florida for the winter, but would still like to enjoy the summer and fall up here in the northern part of the U.S. Plus we don't wish to live year-round away from our kids, some of them will be staying in the general region. We still see our old friends in Doylestown, and really enjoy seeing how the area has not only maintained it's special character, but has expanded on it. There is ALWAYS something to do!

After reading about so many areas that people relocate to, we decided to take some trips. The Triad and the Triangle areas of North Carolina, Annapolis Maryland, various towns in Virginia, for example -even spots in Vermont. Saw some nice spots, but just didn't get us excited enough to consider living there.

Is it a nutty idea to move back to Doylestown going into the next phase of life? Is it going backward in life? I'm not trying to recapture anything; I just like the area better than anything else I've seen so far. Has anyone moved back to the area they came from and might answer from experience? Pros and cons welcome! Bring it on!

Thank you for reading through my wordiness! Thanks in advance for your input ~ I'm looking forward to reading your viewpoints.

Default No Brainer

Flee to the Florida condo after Christmas and come back to a place you know and love when the tulips bloom. Lots of people do it. Great town, near family. Sounds good!

As long as you could afford Doylestown, why would you have any hesitation? Nobody's keeping score on where you live.

Default Moving Back

I am currently in Raleigh, NC and while it is a beautiful area, I'm looking forward to getting back to Philadelphia. It is HOT and HUMID in Raleigh and it seems that it just keeps getting hotter! There is a lot to do and you are close to the mountains and the beach, but not nearly as much to do as there is in the Philadelphia area. Doylestown is beautiful.

Good Luck!

Thank you to all for your great responses. My husband was just saying this morning that he'd like to try someplace new rather than go back to where we used to live. I'm not 100% sure that "new" = "better." We'll continue to explore, but D-Town has sure set the bar pretty high!!

Default Raleigh

Raleigh wouldn't be a bad choice..it's crowded here, especially in CARY. The historic areas downtown are all great! I live in Oakwood, but Mordecai, Cameron Park and Five Points are all nice.

If you want different, what about Ashville, NC? Beautiful mountain community with vibrant downtown, cooler weather.

Feel free to ask if you have any specific questions about the Triangle.

Good Luck! The Philadelphia forum has been so helpful!!

I'd be back in Doylestown in a heartbeat. Great town with great people. Good luck with your decision.

Doylestown is a wonderful place (and $$$!!!!).

Moving "back" is definitely not a step backwards - but sometimes you discover that you outgrow a place, and coming back isn't what you expected.

I'm actually in the opposite situation at the moment (moved back to PA after 6 years out west, now realized that PA isn't what I had my heart set on. *sigh*).

But the thing is, you'll never know until you do it!

(We're actually also looking at the Carolinas)
