I was offered a job with 40k starting pay as a manager. Is this something acceptable for Philadelphia area? Also, how much would that approximately be monthly after taxes? I am single. Thanks!

Nope.. You're gonna starve & not be able to pay your rent!
Naaa, J/K . It depends on where you want to live, want to drive, want to eat, etc.

Just a one single person without a family or spouse can do okay in Philly.. Even with a family it all goes back to my second statement.., "the what do's & where do's".

In the city you would be ok, but the suburbs you may have a rough time.

Not ok in center city, either.

Center City or Suburb, it's a relative question. It all depends on what OP situation is. Is he currently employed? What is his plans/goals. $40K may be nothing to one person but $100K to others.

It's not what it used to be. Asking if $40K is a good salary is like asking if $X amount of dollar is good for retiring. It's all relative.

obviously 40k for five vs 40k for one are vastly different things. in terms of whether it's a market rate salary, that depends on what you're managing.

eh if he were to go for a small studio he could even swing CC.

Listen 40K ain't exactly enough to set the world on fire. He's not going to be living in the lap of luxury.

But is 40K enough to live in philly? If it weren't something like 80% of Philadelphians are somehow making it work.

I know a lot has changed since then. But less than a decade ago, after graduating the first job I had paid me only 32K. I lived in a beautiful apartment in Northern Liberties, had cable, internet, etc. Went out every week multiple times. I mean honestly I wasn't exactly starving to death. I was more than fine.

At the same time though, my apartment was not big. It was a 1BR, but it was smaller than a lot of studios I've seen. I also did not have a car. I also didn't exactly have the greatest wardrobe back then.

So don't think you're not going to have to work at keeping your budget in order. 40K is not a lot of money. But there are millions of people making due with a lot less, you'll be fine.

If you're asking if it's a competitive wage for your job... well then we kind of need a lot more info on what exactly you'll be doing here.

You will be fine unless you have tons of college loans to pay off.
