Phoenxville may be a good fit, as would somewhere in the Downingtown school district. Gonna be a small house or a town home/carriage home tho and probably way out there. If you can swing private school you could consider a place like Lansdowne and put your child in parochial school.

Philly schools are mostly bad so I would recommend a place like Delaware County - Springfield, Havertown or Drexel Hill specifically although Upper Darby (Drexel Hill) schools are on the decline unfortunately. Also maybe check out Norwood/Prospect Park/Glenolden (Interboro SD) or Secane/Ridley (Ridley SD) or Brookhaven/Parkside (Sun Valley SD). If you're not married to living close to the city, you should check out Phoenixville, Downingtown, Collegeville as they all have affordable housing and good schools.

On the Jersey side, I think Swedesboro has affordable housing and good schools.

Oops sorry I was posting the cost to buy not rent - rents are around $1000-$1500 max for a 3 bedroom townhome in Mt Laurel. My friends rent a 3 bedroom which is very very nice for $1300 a month.

The original poster might want to consider the Garden City section of Nether Providence (Wallingford). I live there, and though you may need a bit of elbow grease, there are a couple of single homes in your range. (I'M NOT A REALTOR) Nether Providence Township (http://everyhome.com/pade/padenp2201.htm - broken link)

Wallingford has its own Arts Center https://www.communityartscenter.org/, is right next door to Swarthmore and has one of the best school districts around http://www.wssd.org/ , with an excellent gifted program. The Elwyn school is in the next town over, in Middletown, and is a large special needs facility for children and adults http://www.elwyn.org/ . We are right near 1-95 and a 20-minute drive to Center City. We are also bordered by Media, the county seat and a nice, folksy, artsy kind of town http://visitmediapa.com/ .

In case your wondering by now, Wegman's is a very overrated supermarket chain that has giant stores and that many of us do quite well without.
