Hi all! My spouse and I are relocating to the area from the Midwest with two young kids. My spouse will be working in NE Philly, so we've been looking at houses in the northern suburbs in Montgomery County. But I'm thinking we should maybe consider Bucks County as well. I've read good things here about Yardley and Newtown. What school districts are those towns in? What's the feel of those places? Are there other places not too far off of I-95 (or less than 30 minutes from NE Philly) that we should consider? Our priority is to live someplace very family-oriented and with good schools. Our budget is about $400k for a house.

Oh, and do you tend to get more for your money when it comes to houses in the Yardley/Newtown area compared to the Abington/Huntingdon Valley area?

Thanks!

Look into Doylestown. Great schools, wonderful things to do for the family. Lotsa culture, great place to live. Very safe! This is true for all of central Bucks co. Upper Bucks tends to be more rural. Why not consider paying a visit to Bucks co. and see! Great community college there, too. Also, easy access to Philly wether by car or commuter train. I recommend the commuter train.

Some areas of central Bucks are more expensive than others, for ex. Solebury and Carversville. In Doylestown (D'town) you should be able to find something in your price range. Check the usual on-line real estate sites for homes and prices and you'll see! Good luck! Let us know what you think!

Depending on where in NE Philly (presumably near 95), I don't know that Doylestown keeps you within a 30 minute commute. And the train would take hours. Yardley and Newtown are both nice areas in the Pennsbury and Council Rock school districts respectively. I think home values are kind of a toss up in the areas you mention. All of them have places that would go for much higher than $400K; Abington will probably have more homes that are below that - less so for the Bucks communities.

The train usually takes me about an hour if I get the express, otherwise it is longer, but I don't mind. I would rather sit and chill out on the train and let someone else do the driving rather than drive. My other half likes to drive, and prefers to drive into the city. To each his own, and whatever works. Another possibility is to drive part way, take the train into the city. Can you tell I hate to drive, esp. into the city?

They'd have to switch trains in CC to get to Northeast Philly.

He'll be working in the industrial area just east of the North East Philadelphia airport (a little corporate airport, I believe). So he'd travel up US-1 or I-95.

To work off of Southampton Rd in NE philly you would only be about 20 minutes from most exits of Newtown/Yardley of I-95, and traffic is not bad AT ALL during rush hour in those areas.. it actually doesn't get back until Academy Rd, and you would be getting off closer to St Rd or Woodhaven so you would be FINE!

As for towns - Council Rock is Newtown, Richboro, Holland and Upper Makefield. Pennsbury is Yardley, Fairless Hills and parts of Levittown (Falls Twp). You could also consider Langhorne, which is Neshaminy school district. Langhorne is very nice, similar feel to Yardley and Newtown and even closer to your work.

Yes, Langhorne is nice. I was going to mention it, but I guess I am partial to D'town 'cuz' I live there. In general, IMO Bucks county in general is a nice place to live.

The cultural amenities in Philadelphia are wonderful, too. I just don't like to drive to get to them!

I feel compelled to make sure Churchville and Wrightstown aren't forgotten.
