I would like to get that book but I cannot find it in any of the bookstores here in Ohio. Hoewever I have his Rosary Girls - it is awesome and I just bought his Merciless - I have not started to read it but it looks that will be an awesome story as well.

I liked it so much, I had my wife and son read it and they loved it too. Action packed and above all real. He didn't exaggerate at all. Southwest Philly wasn't that bad lol.

Given the amount of gun violence we have experienced in Philadelphia, I.d recommend 3rd and Indianna for 5th grade reading and discussion in all our schoolsl throughout the city. The drug world is even more deadly and entreñced than when Steve Lopez wrote his wonderful book. ANNNND, it is no longer just a badlands tradegy. MAYBE we should all read that book..

Can you tell me what impact you believe reading this book would have on 5th-graders?

I haven't read this book, but my opinion is that those who think "that life" is cool will continue to think it's cool, those who think that life is abhorrent will continue to think it's abhorrent. Probably anyone destined for that lifestyle by 5th grade wouldn't read the book anyway - too busy watching Scarface and playing Grand Theft Auto.
