Hi, I'm a a student in the city. I'm looking to live close to Philly, but not in the city. I currently live in South Philly, however am still really close to Center City. The neighborhood is okay. I've lived in worse areas of the city, and worked in very nice areas. The thing I've noticed is even many of the nicer areas at night, there are still plenty sketchy things which happen, and the area can still be very noisy.I'd like to live close to the city, without living in the city. So I was wondering which areas people would recommend. I'm looking to spend at the most 500 a month, plus utilities, maybe even less. I understand the less I spend, the more I'm probably compromising my safety. I'm also car less, so an area near public transportation would be a nice. I'd relocate to New Jersey, or Delaware, but would prefer P.A.

$500 is going to make it tough. Your best bet is to look at a Septa map and pick some areas close to the regional rail stops, and preferably not too far from the city. You're more likely to find apartments in boroughs like Jenkintown or Narberth, but maybe some other people will have suggestions.

I believe the only realistic way that you'll find a place for $500 is if you split with a roommate. I'd actually be suspicious of anyplace/anyone that offered a unit for that amount. Maybe ten years ago....

You can find decent one bedrooms in some of the older Camden County NJ boroughs like Somerdale for pretty cheap, but $500 is probably still too low. I would say $600 to $700 might work. However, you would need a car to get around. The $500 apartments that are walking distance to the Lindenwold PATCO are pretty rough and I wouldn't want to live there, you'd probably be better off in most parts of South Philly.

Look around University City. I've seen apartments go for pretty cheap on really nice blocks around here, and it's pretty quiet too. Obviously go look at any place first to see if you're comfortable with it.

You wont find anything in a decent suburb for that price.
