When are you moving? November 2011
Where are you coming from? Mississippi
Why are you moving? New job
Where will you be working? Penn
Have you been here yet? Briefly as a tourist and then for the interview

Will you buy or rent? Rent
If renting, are you looking for an apartment, a townhouse or loft? No preference
How much can you spend? Up to $1000. Might be comfortable spending more if some/all utilities included.
Do you prefer hi-rise or walk up? No preference

Are you married or single? Single
Do you have children? Nope
Do you prefer public or private schools? N/A
Do you have pets? Yes, 2 cats.
Do you want or need a yard? No
Are you keeping a car? Yes
Do you prefer bustling activity or calm and quiet? Calm and quiet

What do you want to be closest to? I want to be within a 30 minute train ride to Penn. Would like to be within walking distance of public transport, but can tolerate a short drive (5-10 minutes) to a station.

Do you want to live with people of a similar age, race, religion or sexual preference or do you prefer a diverse neighborhood? I'm a black female in my late 20s. Nice to have others my age around, but not necessary. I really just want to live in a relatively safe place where I can cruise around the neighborhood on my bike or go out for a jog.

I would appreciate any advice you all have. Thanks!

Center City or University City imo.

There is an incredible park and river trail for biking/jogging. There are hundreds of thousands of young professionals and students walking the streets. Incredible eateries/restaurants/bars.

You mentioned calm + quiet but you may be surprised just how peaceful the Center City neighborhoods can be.

The one slight problem may be bringing your car. Finding available parking spots will be a challenge. The Philadlephia Parking Authority is voracious.

Good luck.

Good point. When I saw "calm and quiet", I defaulted to suburban options. But you are definitely right that there are quiet nooks in both Center City as well as University City.

Thanks for the replies! I'm definitely keeping my car for the first year, but I'll look into places in Center City and University City that might be relatively car friendly. Also looking at West Mt. Airy.

I'm getting really excited about the move.

Media is a nice town but very family oriented and I dont think it would be that friendly to outsiders. A single person- especially not from this area- could get bored pretty easily there imo.

Its not for everybody but The best place for young, single, newcomers imo has to be the Center City/University City area. It has a vibe like no other place in this region.

West Mt. Airy would be an excellent alternative to Center City or University City.
