Let's say you live in the Philadelphia metro suburbs (10 to 25 miles from Center City). You like to visit cities for family fun.

Do you visit Philadelphia for weekend fun? What are some of the things you like to do? Is the new Penn Park something that helps? That is, one can park the car and stroll around both U. City and Center City more seamlessly?

Or do you go to NYC/DC more often for family fun, and skip Philadelphia?

Thanks!

Yes, all the time. Museums, zoo, restaurants, just walking around, etc

we live about 15 miles outside of Center City, and we tend to go to the city once a month. As Angus said -- museums, zoo, etc. In the winter we tend to go to Reading Terminal and buy groceries and get lunch at the varying shops.

Nothing against NYC or DC, but Philly is so much closer with LOTS to do. I'm in the western 'burbs and when my kids were younger, we'd go into the city to the museums (Franklin Institute, Art Museum, Academy of Natural Science), the Philadelphia Zoo and the ballpark (go Phillies!). At Christmas, we'd take the train in to see the then-Wanamaker's/now-Macy's Christmas light show, grab a bite at the Reading Terminal Market, and watch a performance of The Nutcracker at the Academy of Music.

Visit often. Museum, parks, restaurants, concerts, sporting events, walking around Center City/University City.

Penn Park? Is a new park on U Penns campus. Its mainly for Penn athletics, soccer, tennis ec but it is open to the public to browse through. If you are interested in Parks you should do a google search of Schuylkill Banks/Kelly Drive/Forbidden Drive which start in Center City. Incredible urban recreational trails for biking and running.

I live in Media, so Philadelphia is very close & accessible. We take the kids into the city at least once (usually more) a month. There's a ton to do.

We'll usually take the train if we're going into Center City or University City. (More because my kids LOVE the train than any concerns about parking. Weekend parking is easy.) If we're going the zoo or Please Touch Museum, for example, we drive. (Parking for those is included with yearly membership, and although public transportation is available it requires train + subway or Phlash bus.)

Penn Park opened just opened in mid-September so we have not yet checked that out, but we have often attended Penn sporting events with the kids. Franklin Field and the Palestra, in particular, are great venues.

We've also taken the kids to NYC, DC and Baltimore, but for that we usually stay overnight. You can have family fun in Philadelphia with a couple of free hours. The other cities are certainly accessible but it takes a little more planning.

These are great ideas. I'll add that the Wanamaker's/Macy's Christmas show is nostalgic, but if you want something more modern & cool stop in the lobby of the Comcast Center for their (free) annual Christmas show. It's quite impressive. Also, Camden Yard in Baltimore and National Park in DC are easy day trips if you like baseball!
