Hello,

My husband and I are interested in an apartment near Greene & W. Johnson in Mt. Airy. We walked around the area and loved the overall friendliness of the neighborhood.

After doing some research into the crime stats, I've realized the address is technically in Germantown according to many reports. Can anyone comment on the safety of this area? I will likely be walking to Upsal station during regular business hours to commute into CC. Is the station and neighborhood area safe? Are there many people walking around on the streets during morning/evening commute?

Thank you in advance for your comments!

It's a safe area. There's not much around there in terms of nightlife, so in the evenings, you won't see much foot traffic, but there's always people around during the day.

Germantown is a large and varied neighborhood with many sub-neighborhoods. It's a shame that people's perception seems to be that "Germantown = bad", because that's not really true.

That area is similar in safety to Mt Airy a few blocks away. Like most of Mt Airy though, it is a quiet area with not much street activity. If this is something that you would be very uncomfortable with, then maybe it's not the spot for you. I would advise checking out this, as well as any unfamiliar area you're considering moving to at various times of day, as well as at night.

Upsal is fine; IIRC it's right on the border between Germantown and Mt. Airy. I used to visit friends who lived on W. Johnson Street and they (and I) were comfortable using that station. It's always good to be aware of your surroundings late at night but I would not say the surrounding area is dangerous by any stretch.

I grew up in Mt. Airy and just sold a triplex in West Germantown. I travel past the Upsal station a lot and at different times of the day and I never notice anything shady going on. There are a lot of people who live in West Mt. Airy who take the Upsal station to work. For a peace a mind, drive by station and the area at different times of the day.

Thank you for your kind replies! We're looking forward to moving to the neighborhood in a few short weeks!

On a related note, can anyone confirm the type of Septa pass best for daily commuting from Upsal station into CC? This was the most recent info I could find on SEPTA's site. I was thinking the Zone 1 TrailPass may be a good option, but noticed it appears to only be valid on "trains scheduled to arrive at 30th St, Suburban, or Market East Stations after 9:30 a.m." Would I need to order the Zone 1 (or possible Zone 2?) 10-trip tickets online instead?

Zone 1 TrailPasses valid on Regional Rail for travel from stations located within the geographic boundaries of the City of Philadelphia, to CCP Stations, on trains scheduled to arrive at 30th St, Suburban, or Market East Stations after 9:30 a.m. (except Forest Hills and Somerton Stations)http://www.septa.org/fares/new/fare-brochure-2010.pdf

I would recommend the Zone 2 Trailpass. Assuming you'll be commuting into Center City five days a week, it will be less expensive than a ten-trip ticket.

Upsal is definitely Zone 2. While technically within the city limits, it's not Zone 1.
