We are a pair of retired teachers with two daughters in the NYC area. We live a nice, suburban existence in the South. We have about a 2800 sq ft brick house worth approx 300,000. We are in a well educated area. We are politically moderate. What would be a possible town/suburb we might like somewhere PA or toward NYC with train access. I would like safety, good shopping, educated area, good hospitals, whatever. Any thoughts?

I would look into one of the over 55 communities in Cranbury or Jamesburg. In this depressed real estate market 300,000 or even less would provide a luxurious lifestyle there. Rossmore, Clearbrook, Concordia, Wittingham etc. 08831. It is about halfway between NY and Philly. You won't find many single family houses in central NJ for that kind of money.

You should check out the nicer parts of Delaware County. The Aronomink section of Drexel Hill is a very nice and definitely affordable place though it's now a big place for families so if you've got a problem with that I would suggest looking elsewhere. I'm not sure how much places like Springfield and other similar areas would cost but they have some very nice houses for sure.

Plus, you can hop on a bus pretty much anywhere and go to 69th street, then take the El to 30th street, and take a train out to NYC from there. The whole area is pretty well served by SEPTA if you know where to go and how to use the system. There's plenty of shopping both in the general vicinity of Aronimink and all over Delaware County, as well as movie theaters, restaurants, everything you could possibly want. King of Prussia and other malls are only a hop, skip, (and possibly a half hour or so bus ride) away, and if you're driving then most everything is probably within a half hour or so.

Oh, and Delaware County has been moderate on average for decades. There's some very Republican people and some very Democratic people depending on where you live but all in all, we're mostly the type who want to live in a good community and have decent social services available to us and don't care too much about the other things as long as they don't get in our way or affect us too much.
