My husband has just applied for a job at Princeton and we're trying to investigate from afar the feasibility of moving to the area from North Carolina. The folks on the NJ forum suggested posting here for more info about Bucks County.

We're especially concerned with:

-Excellent and safe schools for our rising 4th grader;
-Family neighborhood;
-Eventual job prospects for me. I'm not faculty, but my work history has all been at universities, and that would probably be the most likely venue for me.

Could we find this for under $300K? Which neighborhoods would we want to investigate? What is the commute like to Philadelphia if that's where I could find a job? Anything else we should know?

Thank you in advance!

Have you read this forum? Most of your answers are already here. You will need to study the map and become familiar with the geography between Princeton and Philadelphia in order to recognize the threads that will be useful to you. You may or may not get a lot of responses but the same people do get tired of answering the same questions over and over again.

Yes, you can find this under 300k. You are going to be limited to smaller homes or townhomes in Langhorne, and homes in Levittown that fall in the Neshaminy or Pennsbury school district.

For under $300K i think you'd be looking at southern Bucks county - places like Bensalem, Langhorne, Levittown. that would be Neshaminy school district which is decent (although not at the same level as Central Bucks and Council Rock), at least when the teachers aren't on strike, which they currently are (again). That area would also give you a pretty good commute to Philly, either via train or I-95.

The only area in lower Bucks that should be avoided is Bristol Township which contains a portion of but by no means all of Levittown. This will become apparent as you do your research. Also the Wikipedia article on Levittown, PA is excellent. Google it. You can try Find Real Estate, Homes for Sale & Houses for Rent on Realtor.com - Realtor.com® and plug in each of these zips 19056, 19047, 19030,19054. Also 18940 and 19067 are somewhat more expensive areas where you may find a townhouse. These are all good areas with good schools..... except Bristol.

Investigate the condos in New Hope, PA, specifically the Village 2 condos. There is at least one listed under $300K. Or, could you rent while you search the area?

You would surely like central Bucks/New Hope area, and it is closer to Princeton, too. Not a bad drive.
