well, these same type animals walk up to Philly police friends of ours and call them every name in the book right in their face and they can't do a thing about it. Like I said its illegal to strike someone but its not to call them a name. Don't put words in my mouth I did not say whether its 'right' or not. I said its illegal.

There are such things as "fighting words," but I've seen people curse or yell at one another on the street and not resort to physically attacking each other. All it takes is a little self control.
You're right, though, just because somebody "says something" it doesn't give the person on the receiving end the right to attack them.

Personally, I think it's more about hating white people because of what they think white people have that they themselves don't. There's been tension between the haves and have-nots of this entire metro for centuries. It's been like that out in Delaware County for I don't even know how long. I grew up hating kids I thought were "rich" (in reality they were middle to upper-middle class) because they took it for granted and because so many of them pretended to be ghetto or didn't know when to shut up and were always trying to get big.

I'm not saying there's not racism or major racial tensions, because there are. I'm just saying that I think it's about more than race and moreso about what that race represents to them.
Also, a major part of the problem is that white children have had it hammered into their heads for at least the past twenty years to respect and accept other races and cultures (especially black), while it seems like black and Hispanic children are being taught (I'll make this brief) "f*ck whitey."

On the other hand it does seem like the flash mob mentality. There have been incidents like this on the subway but I never heard of them attacking a cab in traffic. I am reserving judgment.

The Cabbie probably honked at them for shucking and jiving in the middle of the street. I would need more than two hands to count the amount of times I saw a group of black kids cursing at a Septa Driver or Cabbie for making them move from the middle of the street.

To add some more fuel to the racially charged debate, on my commute to work this morning a wonderful African American man standing outside of the Troc said to me "Give me money for drugs you white b*tch, or ill kill you."

I think I'll be buying an ASP baton for me and Mace for my wife.

That is my point, thanks..

For the record, Philly is not somehow unique in its racial tensions. When I lived in DC, I felt that you could often cut the racial tension with a knife. The New York City area seems to routinely have racial/ethnic issues. Unfortunately, we still live in a world where some people still obsess over race, regardless of their own color.

I also think someone who commented about class was right on, as I think there is more class tension than anything these days. The "haves" vs. the "have-nots" has only gotten worse over time. There is clearly a hopeless underclass of people that are concentrated in cities across the world. Many of them feel like senseless violence is an acceptable way to deal with their anger and agnst.

There's no simple solution to this, and we can only hope that time will make things better for everyone.

really? It's the norm?

If that were true any white person in the city of Philadelphia should EXPECT to be attacked by young blacks in this city.

RIDICULOUS!

Even with all the flash mob violence of this past summer and all other instances of black on white crime, the fact is that the majorly VAST majority of white people in the city of Philadelphia shouldn't expect to have ANY crime committed against them.

Statistically white people should be a lot more afraid of people living in their own homes who are their same race than angry young blacks on the city streets as there is a whole lot more cases of domestic assault than the few but highly publicized events when young blacks attack white people.

That is not to say that there isn't a problem with violence in Philadelphia. The problem is enormous, but we can't even begin to fix it until we understand it. Spreading misinformation and promoting fear do nothing to help this city, it's residents or it's perspective visitors.

I mean when somebody IS attacked (and it happens every day in this city, it just doesn't always make the news), it's normally a white (or Asian) by a black. Really, how many blacks are being rolled on by whites? When it does happen, it's national news.
