We prefer north of philly because we have family in NYC so traveling back and forth for family visits will be a bit easier in Bucks or Mont county.

In that case Cheltenham Township would be a good fit for you if you're looking for north of the city. Ive lived in Elkins Park since we moved out of the city when I was 10...until just last summer...and let me just say this: it's a safe neighborhood with good schools and diversity, although the jewish population has declined there are still a good number of jewish people there and there are several synagogues.

I will second the above posts and recommend Cheltenham and Abington townships. Public transit options are OK...most areas in the townships, especially Cheltenham, are close to buses and trains. They are in the southern part of Montgomery County and are more urbanized than the rest. I live basically in the heart of Jenkintown, an independent town sandwiched between the two townships; its dense and parking is difficult but it's very walkable and its in a very central location. All good choices if you like the older inner-ring, diverse areas.

If you plan to travel to NYC regularly, take a look at Yardley and Newtown. Access to I-95, the Rt 1 corridor and NJ Transit (Trenton or Hamilton stations) for travel to NYC is much closer. There are several synagogues nearby. My kids went to Council Rock schools and had off for the Jewish holidays. I assume Pennsbury is the same, but I can't speak from experience.

I guess at this point we are torn between the Jenkintown/Abington area and Newtown/Yardley. Safe to assume Newtown/Yardley is just more rural?

There are a few farms left, but I wouldn't call it rural, just more countrified suburban. Parts of Newtown/Yardley don't have sidewalks. The northern part of the area (Upper Makefield Twp) has a lot of large homes on large lots (> 5 acres).

Best thing to do is visit and look around.
