Hello all,

I just accepted a job in King of Prussia. I am very confused about where to live. I am a Pittsburgh native and haven't spent much time in Philly. (please, give me good advice, even after that Pens/Flyers debacle on Saturday )

Many of the neighborhoods sound like they would fit me, but I'd like to find the best one. I am mid-20's, like to be outside (bike/run), try restaurants, go to bars every now and then, work out, and be around cultural events. I am happy to live around some families and older people. I do not want to be around college undergrads or that type of party scene.

I am willing to pay for the right place (around $1200, give or take). Must be a safe neighborhood. Covered parking is great but I haven't seen that as an option many places.

My biggest worry is the commute. I have heard many horror stories about "soul crushing" car rides and would like to avoid making this mistake. I am willing to tolerate a little longer commute for the right place.

The areas I have in mind so far are: West Chester, Malvern, Conshohocken, Manayunk/Mt. Airy/Germantown, and the Mainline. I would like to have at least train access to the city for when I want to go downtown. I have discounted Phoenixville (Friends say too suburban, family oriented) and Norristown (heard it was kind of a dump).

Am I missing any factors I should consider? Am I evaluating correctly? What would be my best bet?

If you have any recommendations for me I would be very thankful. I really appreciate the advice.

I'd discount the Main Line as well (including Malvern). Ardmore is decent if you're a grad student, but I wouldn't recommend it for young working professionals.

Manayunk's great, but if anywhere will make for a "soul crushing car ride," it's there. Mt. Airy/Germantown suffer similar problems.

Conshy's your best bet for sure.

Well, Phoenixville is actually one of the more urbanized centers in this area. Its a borough, and has a small but decent historic downtown strip along Bridge Ave. Sure it has families but it also has an artist / younger contingent indicated by the coffeeshops, hookah bar (now closed), and newly-opened head shop. (I think students from Ursinus in nearby Collegeville frequent Phoenixville). Its close to KOP, as well as Valley Forge Park where you'll find trails for biking and hiking, etc. The only problem is that it has no direct SEPTA line to Philadelphia.

I'd suggest also looking into the Abrams Run development in KOP itself, across from the Home Depot. The price might be right, its clean, and obviously there is no commute. And you'll be close to both Valley Forge/outdoorsy stuff and SEPTA to the city.

Thanks for all of the input! I will make sure to focus more on Conshohocken.

Is the commute from the Manayunk area to KOP really that bad? Could you quantify it at all?

Any thoughts on the West Chester area?

Thanks again all.

West Chester to KoP isn't a great commute with the traffic on 202. Plus it is more of a college town which you said you didn't want. Manayunk also has a college/recent grad party feel to it as well.

I strongly recommend Conshohocken - easiest commute with a good number of young professionals and some decent bars.
