Hi,

Moving back to the East Coast from the SF area. Taking a job in Horsham, but will need easy accessibility to the airport also, hopefully by train? (The position involves monthly travel). I'd like to rent a 1 BR in a pretty area with things to do within walking distance, if possible. (Restaurants, shopping, etc..). Not so sleepy, but safe in a general way. Schools aren't an issue, I'm single so a little nightlife would be great, but not imperative as I'm close enough to Philly for that when the mood strikes I was thinking Bensalem, as it's close to the river for tubing, kayaking. Any other towns come to mind? I'll be in town next weekend to search, so I'd love any advice this week. Any and all suggestions from the locals will be greatly appreciated, thank you!

What's your rental budget?

Also, why not Horsham itself? It's next door to Hatboro which not only has a Regional Rail line that goes directly to the airport but also a charming downtown area. Glenside and Jenkintown have compact, attractive downtowns themselves. You're never too far from a supermarket or "big box" retail and the Willow Grove Park mall is just down the road. Nockamixon State Park due north has lakes for your recreational needs.

Bensalem is okay. Most all of Bucks County is solid suburbia. Doylestown has a nice downtown albeit further north than Horsham and a longer trip to the city.

I'm thinking you're better off in Montco as well, Jenkintown, Hatboro, Horsham, Glenside.. Bensalem doesnt really have much going on, not really walkable, etc.

Hi Tone,

I guess I just never considered it because I haven't heard of the town before. I'm originally from NJ, so I know the New Hope area, and Philly, of course. I always thought Bucks County would be a beautiful place to live. I will be in Horsham later this week, and will definitely check out the immediate area, too. How would Hatboro be to live? If I could live within walking distance or a short cab ride to the train, that would be great! Thank you again for all your great advice!

I'd suggest Ambler, which is also in Montco. The Ambler movie theater and Act II playhouse have attracted more nightlife options than other towns have, and it's an easy train ride to CC Philly.

What do you guys think about Wyncote/Elkins Park? It's a closer train ride to the airport, and looks like an easy 10 min commute to Horsham.

I might add another 10 minutes onto that commuting time as you'll inevitably cross trafficky Old York Road/Rt.611 and/or Easton Road/Rt. 63. It's close to Jenkintown which has a cute downtown as mentioned before. Between Old York Road and the Willow Grove Mall area off Easton, virtually all of your (upper-)midscale shopping needs will be satisfied.

Hatboro is fine. Not unlike many of the surrounding towns, it's a family-friendly bedroom community of long-time residents. There are some decent apartments on York Road on which you can take the #55 to within a couple of blocks of the Hatboro station. If you don't feel like lugging your luggage, you can also call ahead to a cab company for a very quick ride to the station.

Thank you everyone for all the great advice! I have my work cut out for me in two short days. Can't wait to actually move back East! I guess sometimes you have to leave home to realize how good you had it.
