This. If you come dressed normally, you'll be fine and there will be plenty of people who would love to help you out & welcome you to their city. If you're wearing any NY/NJ sports team or Cowboys stuff, make sure you have good health insurance and tell your wife and kids you love them before you leave .

Thank you. Ok, this is sort of what I was looking for, in terms of an answer, in that it makes it relative. I also found Baltimore to be pretty down-to-earth so, if comparable, that's cool.

The ones I know I've met in other places (ATL, grad school) and were pretty "real" about life and had good senses of humor.

Like I've posted on another thread, I like newer townhouses in the suburbs. It sounds like King of Prussia, or thereabouts, would be a good area for this type of housing. Where are the newer commutable suburbs (to Center City) that have this kind of housing at decent prices?

Define "decent price," along with "commutable."

Say townhouse. 2+2. Has 2 car garage. Some brick or stone. Toward King of Prussia (I'm tossing out a name, since I know of Villanova Univ. and the big mall). Toward NW or W from Center City. $250K to $280K? Yes? No? Laughter on the other end?

Definitely doable as far as price goes, but rush hour traffic is horrendous. If that doesn't bother you, you should be able to get into Philly in about 30-40 minutes during off-peak hours. A little closer to the city, you could find something good in Conshohocken, which is also more convenient to public transportation.

It's hard to say really. I'm from Philly, so I never experienced being a newcomer in this city. Of course, most of the Philadelphians on here will stick up for themselves, but I'd like to hear from some people who are not from Philly or the surrounding suburbs.

I'm not from Philly - I find people here very friendly, overall. I live in Center City right now (not for long), which has all sorts of people from all of the place really, and it's not really a fair barometer. But whenever I travel out to the Northeast or Northwest parts of the city, which is quite often, I always am reminded of how friendly people here. Strangers saying hello on the sidewalk, workers at stores being helpful, people striking up conversation on SEPTA.

I was a newcomer once. I was struck, at the time, by the general niceness of most people I met.

They've been nice to me just like anywhere else.
