recently graduated from university, will soon be working in the north wales area. Any suggestions for areas with a good nightlife and decent shopping for a 23 year old. Max time I would like to commute to work would be 30 minutes (driving).

North Hills? Do you mean Glenside? The Keswick Avenue corridor might keep a younger professional busy enough during the week.

EDIT: I should add that you'll be just down the road from Willow Grove Park mall which should satisfy all but the highest end of tastes. Big box retail is available over on Old York Road in Abington.

Note that none of the places will have nightlife that compares to the city proper, particularly in and around the neighborhoods of Center City. But if you're looking for a place with a few options to grab a drink and a restaurant with local flair, the suggested towns will certainly do.

What about Jenkintown? There is the Drake Tavern on Old York rd plus access to a lot of other dining/entertainement options along that corridor, plus easy access to the city (regional rail) and about a 30 minute commute to North Wales. Ambler is also a good option with a main street that has entertainment.
