NJT is fine. I just don't think it's leaps and bounds ahead of SEPTA ala NYC or DC. Our heavy rail is much better, our buses are comparable, and our subway/light rail is a bit behind, but is starting to play a nice game of catchup.

Whaddya mean by playing catchup? What's wrong with the El & Sub that's behind some other systems?
Just curious.

Well if factor in the PATH were even more better.....our trains go faster and service more people. Our Buses and Terminals are cleaner and service a huge area....

Comparatively limited coverage in that department. It would be good to have more lines like the Norristown High Speed Line.

Your trains service more people and areas because New Jersey is a fricking state. For the area it covers, the SEPTA system as a whole is much more comprehensive.

meh - not sure about that. If you only look at the north jersey RR routes, buses, PATH and light rail it's pretty comparable in terms of size, area covered, etc. - the North Jersey system covers a slightly larger area but if service to West Chester, Quaktertown and Reading ever come back the difference would be insignificant.

There are plusses and minuses with NJT compared to SEPTA. NJT trains have bathrooms. I can't think of any rail platform for any train in the NJT system that doesn't have a ticket vending machine. OTOH, SEPTA has a seamless fare system if you buy a weekly or monthly pass. A monthly pass on NJT is not for a particular zone. It's between the stations you travel to and from as a commuter. SEPTA's Trailpass is a lot better.

Generally speaking, NJT has a cleaner system - but that's not really a huge feat considering that it's a mostly suburban system.

I have lived in West Philadelphia without a car for almost 2 years. I rely on SEPTA for my transportation. Philadelphia is an incredibly accessible city because of SEPTA, especially the denser areas. The Far NE, Roxborough, and Andorra are not particularly accessible with SEPTA, but most areas of the city are very accessible, especially during the week. Some routes are better than others. The 46, 10, and G run very consistently. The 46 runs like clockwork on weekday mornings.

One unique feature of SEPTA is the variety of vehicles it operates - commuter rail, heavy rail (subway/el), trolley, bus, and trolley bus. Only Philly and Boston's mass transit systems have all 5 types of these vehicles (SEPTA - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

Relative to other government entities (e.g., the School District of Philadelphia, City Hall, the Delaware River Port Authority, etc.), SEPTA is well-managed and less corrupt. Also, when there are delays or diversions, SEPTA is pretty good at communicating these (e.g., track work, delays on the El such as if someone jumps on the tracks).

We all like to hate on septa, but it truly is a very extensive system. It may not be popular or glamorous, but it gets the job done.

I'm confused by this line. By "our" are you referring to septa or njt?

Isn't that a bit like Philadelphia in a sense? I know I hate on SEPTA but deep down it still gives me pride seeing a Regional Rail train roll up knowing its one in a succession of trains that have been running for 100+ years and are still getting the job done as they always have.
