Hi there, I just accepted a position at Villanova and want to live in Philadelphia, with plans to take the train in. Any recommendations of where in the city? I've heard good things about Center City and I'm curious about average rental prices and specific places that have a fun vibe with lots of things to do. Much thanks!

I'd budget about $1,000/month for one bedroom, but usually you can find a place cheaper. It will really depend on the quality of the apartment though. Some cheaper places may not have been renovated and are showing their age, or are very very small. Any neighborhood in Center City that you can walk to from the train station would probably be fair game then. Since everything is pretty much walkable downtown you really can't go wrong there since you'd be in proximity to all the fun stuff. Check out Washington Square West. You might get lucky on the other side of Broad Street in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood, but be aware that Center City is generally the most expensive part of the city. Fitler Square is another option. It's much quieter, but again, just a short walk away from Rittenhouse Square. Graduate Hospital, Bella Vista, and Queen Village are some other good neighborhoods but are probably a bit too far from the train station to walk from every day. Although you could probably take the subway to Suburban Station from Bella Vista.

Taking the RR out there would take 35 minutes from Market East and 30 minutes from Suburban Station. The trains typically depart every ~20 minutes during the morning rush.

If you took the El from 11th & Market out to 69th St. and transferred to the Route 100 trolley (which also stops on campus) it would take you ~45 minutes. The El departs every 4 minutes and takes 13 minutes to get to 69th St. and the Route 100 departs 69th St every 3 to 15 minutes and takes ~14 minutes to get from 69th to Villanova.

Long story short - don't limit yourself to living within walking distance of a regional rail station. If you live near the El or the Subway it's just as easy to get to.
