Which would have higher property and school taxes, Bensalem or South Philadelphia? Bensalem is aroun $3,800 a year for taxes

You should look at your expenses in total. Philadelphia's property taxes are lower because it has a 4% wage tax. Once you add that into the mix, the overall tax burden can be equal to NJ and many of the PA burbs like Bensalem. $3800/year with a 3% flat state tax and maximum 1% wage tax is a pretty good deal in Bensalem. It may be offset with a higher principal payment versus South Philadelphia (the overall zip code as a whole - not hot areas like Passyunk Square). You'll get more square footage than in the city and more acreage, but you'll be further from the city. Figure out your needs and go from there. Philadelphia isn't exobritantly more expensive than its suburbs (it's unique in that way), but it all depends on your needs, your wants, etc.
