but if i visited texas or idaho - definitely
I'm with you. I grew up in Plymouth Meeting and if someone from the general Northeast said "Where are you from?" I say "outside Philadelphia". I would never say "Philadelphia", one because it's not true and two because I'm probably clearly a suburban person and not a city person. However, if someone across the country asked the same question I'd probably say "Philadelphia", if anything as a way of "representin'".

No worries man.

W...T...F, how about i live in Philly

nobody from greenwhich, CT, Kearny, NJ or massapequa, LI say they're from NYC
I think at a fundamental level it comes down to the fact that NYC shares its name with the state of NY. If Philly were "Pennsylvania City," I doubt people from SJ or DE would say they're "from PA." Hell, New Yorkers don't even let Long Islanders say they are from NY.

I grew up in Philly, and I definitely would take umbrage if someone said they were from Philly when they were actually from the suburbs. It's dumb, and I have ceased caring about that as I've gotten a bit older, BUT I still have a reflex reaction to immediately ask people what high school they went to when I meet someone who says they're "from Philly".

There are two guys "from Philly" who live on my block in Brooklyn. As it turns out they're actually from Coatesville & Narberth respectively, but we get along just fine .

Not really. I grew up in New Jersey suburbs and I hate to admit it but people are nastier in SJ. I dont consider myself that way but it seems like people from PA suburbs are more easygoing. The other thing is, are we talking about philadelphia suburbs like only a little west of philly. Or are we talking about western pennsylvania there is a difference you know.

We found the opposite. The people around us in SJ are not as nasty as the pa people.. We are still shocked at the 'excuse me' and door holding we new experience in Jersey as compared to where we were. But I guess it depends on where you are.

You heard someone say "Excuse me"? And it wasn't in an attitudal, sarcastic tone? What South Jersey are you living in, because it sure as hell isn't the one I come from.

But you also moved from city to suburbs, correct? That's probably a lot more dispositive than PA to NJ.

I still maintain that stereotypes aside, the vast majority of people you'll meet from either side of the river aren't really any different from their social/economic peers.

BTA, you said you lived in Pennsauken, right? Comparing Pennsauken to Moorestown is really no different than comparing Upper Darby to Radnor.
