3. Taco House, 1100 block Pine Street. Another hole-in-the-wall. For decades, the preferred eatery, job provider, and gallery for PCA students. It was hard to spend $5.00 for two people. For those who remember, two words: cheese crisp (cc). Their chile con queso (ccq) was the best anywhere. Tacos? Please. You didn't want to look too closely at the surroundings (bare brick walls, and not the intentional kind), or use the bathroom, but the food was awesome. I've never been able to find a Mexican restaurant that came close, especially at the price.
Boy did I love Taco House! Even though I know the food was objectively not especially "good" or "Mexican", it sure was to me back then! Back when Philly had hardly any Mexican options.

Taco House and the original Minar Palace were my favorite cheap eats places "back in the day".

I don't think they cost that much in New York.

Maybe I should see what they charge at Rachel's Nosherei.

*I've also seen the menu at Hymie's Merion Deli in Merion Station, which is pretty damn authentic if you ask me. Prices nowhere near that stratospheric.
Hymie's and Murray's started on 60th St in W. Philly.

Ah, yeah they do(cost that much in NYC). Ben Nash(7th ave and 50th) and Katz's(lower east side) on E. Houston near 1st Ave.

On the thread where I found Taco House, several people mentioned that they also knew it as Tippy's Tacos. Many of us were in the category of having $1 or less for food money, per day. If we played it right, we could save out enough to go to Tippy's or Paul's Pizza occasionally, usually as a group. If we had the money to each get what we wanted, we went to Tippy's. If not, we pooled money for a pizza. Tippy's had a couple of pinball machines. Video games hadn't been invented.

I walked up Walnut today and noticed Lacoste was closed and there were workers packing some remaining clothes into boxes, did they officially close?

Also Lululemon opened at its new location next to Athleta.

Yes they are closing. And this is the only store in PA which carried the LIVE! collection.
The manager told me that not too many Philadelphians who walk pass their store could afford their clothes.

Well, for every cheap outlets openings in Center City, there are high-end stores closing. As sad as it sounds, it is no surprise.

On a positive news, all the UNIQLO stores in the suburb malls (namely Willow Grove, Cherry Hills and soon recently-opened Montgomery Mall) will be closed by the end of Jan. The only open ones will be Chestnut and KOP. This makes us to have at least one internationally renowned unique store we can be proud of. (They also plan to axe KOP location but give them one year to "prove" themselves).

Oh please, haha. That's bull****. Their clothes aren't that expensive. Did he ever consider that Lacoste just sucks? I never shopped there because I don't like the Alligator or whatever it is on all of their clothes. I'd prefer Banana Republic, Ted Baker, Nordstrom, Brooks Brothers, J. Crew, etc.

I don't believe that either, because then 20 other stores along Walnut St should be closing. I have a friend who works at Banana on Walnut and the Cole Haan store and they say business is thru the roof.

While I am sad for Lacoste to close, they are a bit of a tired brand. All the more room for another higher fashion retailer like Theory or Vince to move in.

Where did you hear that Uniqlo is closing those locations?

None if this really makes sense. Especially as more and more higher-income residents have been moving into the city (as evidenced by the luxury apartment and condo boom), the assertion that incomes can't support a Lacoste, especially having long been on Walnut when Center City was not as well-off as it is now, seems absurd. I agree that it's very likely that it's a brand that's lost its luster and/or it doesn't care to pay rising rents.

Also, it would quite bizarre for Uniqlo to close so many suburban stores after such a dramatic entrance to the market in such a short time. Even if the information you've been told is accurate, of which I'm very skeptical (especially at KOP), this is very likely a decision of Uniqlo at a broader level to abandon its quick suburban mall expansion across the US.

I never once walked into that store. I was young when it very popular and that was back in the 70s.

I went in the Bloomingdales outlet again yesterday and I had a worse impression than the opening. Century 21 is simply better. Better organized. Better lighting. Better displays.
