The Inquirer has turned into a total rag publication. Young inexperienced journalists, near non-existent research and proofreading, a clear negative and completely leftist agenda, and sensationalized headlines that get the social media trolls going. There are a few solid journalists in the mix, but they are largely clouded by the nonsense.

I can share a dozen examples of horrible "articles" just this month.

And you should see the comments on FB for the H&M article. It's pathetic how trolls get enjoyment out of store closures in Philadelphia. And most don't even read the articles, just the headline. The article has a tidbit about Aritzia opening in the old H&M on Walnut... I try to correct some of the ignorant comments, but no sense in that.

*Edit - I contacted the Inquirer this morning to criticize idea of showcasing only closings and not openings.

That's a bummer.

With my hope that Chestnut Street west of Broad gets it's footing and sees a general uptick in quality storefronts, I saw H&M in that equation as an anchor.

I'm having a hard time seeing a restaurant/entertainment venue in that space.

The return of Zara and Williams Sonoma would be a good start. Barnes & Noble is also moving to Chestnut.

But yea, I'd prefer actual retail over yet another entertainment type space.

Given that W-S's furniture chain, West Elm, is in the 1300 block of Chestnut, having it reopen on Chestnut west of Broad would be very fitting.

But speaking of Chestnut west of Broad, didn't someone here post something about the street floor of the Liberty Place mall being turned into some sort of entertainment/experiential retail space? (One of my colleagues pitched a feature they titled "The Shopping Mall is Dead...Long Live the Shopping Mall?" whose premise is that since online shopping has put a hurt on brick-and-mortar retail, those shopping malls that aren't able to find a retail niche to occupy (KofP, outlet malls...) are reinventing themselves by emphasizing experiential commerce (e.g., the bowling alley complex on the top of the Fashion District mall that the Sixers arena is slated to replace).

Yea, a mini-golf venue with a bar is replacing the former Express & maybe J. Crew spaces on Chestnut. A cool idea that brings life to that mall. But the H&M space should find a quality retail tenant. The proliferation of entertainment concepts at the expense of actual retail doesn't do much to improve activity in CC (IMO).

Now if banks and cellphone stores are replaced with entertainment type places, then I am all for that.

Yeah, plus that building is super beautiful. I would think if the rent isn't astronomical, that H&M space will go quickly. In a perfect world, I'd rather see these entertainment venues stick to Market east (except Lucky Strike, which is awesome) and have west of broad - Chestnut & Walnut - stick to Higher/Middle level retail.

Who knows. So many variables we'll never know.

The Philadelphia Business Journal has become a more reliable source of news than the crappy Inquirer.

Free People reopening at 1625 Walnut.

As H&M prepares to close, Free People will reopen in new Center City location

Yeah good news although I was never really worried about Free People reopening in Center City. They always seemed busy and it’s a Philly company.

New Japanese shoe store opening on Walnut

Quote:
The women’s streetwear consumer has long been underserved, and Atmos is looking to change that.
The Japan-based boutique retailer — which was acquired by Foot Locker Inc. in August 2021 — has revealed Atmos Women’s, a space dedicated solely to its female consumers. The concept will launch in its longstanding Philadelphia storefront, which is located at 1509 Walnut Street. Atmos Women’s occupies its second floor, and consumes 1,400 square feet of retail space.
