Occasionally it will spill over into the nice neighborhoods... like a robbery in Center City, or a robbery in Mt. Airy... but no one is getting murdered in Mt. Airy or Chestnut Hill or Manayunk. A vast majority of the shootings in the city are gang or drug related and tend to be isolated to certain sections of the city like North Philadelphia... it is a major city, so obviously it is nice to have street smarts, but the nice areas of the city tend to be void of major crimes. Don't let high crime areas in certain sections deter you from living in the city... and some people will try to have you convinced that Philadelphia is an all out warzone. That's like saying I won't live in Upper Manhattan because of Harlem and the Bronx... or I won't live in Brooklyn because of Bedstuy and East New York and Brownsville... or I won't live in Jersey City because of Newark and Elizabeth... you get the point. Philadelphia is a rapidly changing place. Stay out of the historically bad areas in North Philadelphia and you'll be fine.

Crime rarely never, if ever spills over into the suburbs. You have your trouble areas like Camden, Chester, Wilmington and Upper Darby, but the extreme majority (like 95%) of the Philly suburbs are extremely safe and extremely nice.

To the OP, I would add the Northwest section of the city into the mix of places to check out which includes trendy neighborhoods such as Manayunk, East Falls, Mt. Airy, Roxbrough and Chestnut Hill. Chestnut Hill may be too expensive and Mt. Airy may be too family oriented, so you can check out the others.

If you are young and single, I would suggest living in the city.
A metaphor for life in general.

If you're young and don't want to drive everywhere- it's basically center city or nothing. You can however find decent places south of washington and not have a horrible walk to the city. It's a bit less than ideal, but doable on a budget. Otherwise- you're dealing with traffic and parking in the city- not for the faint of heart.

You owe it to yourself to look into The Lumberyard condominiums in Collingswood. They are strongly looking for young proffs to rent in the next phase of construction which will include (unfortunately), a large number of one bedroom apartments. Great area, I just think they are going the wrong route in the next phase.
