Can you at least concede that nobody should be increased while thousands of deadbeats walk away?
Sure, but the world isn't ideal and the city needs revenue now.

Philadelphia, corrupt and contented. Lincoln Steffens' observation a century ago holds true today.

Expect the City Council members representing those neighborhoods, especially Mark Squilla (D-1st District) and Kenyatta Johnson (D-2nd District), to lead an effort to craft legislation to phase in increases or otherwise cushion the blow to their more recently arrived constituents.

You have to love Nutter. I'm proud to have moved to this city under his administration.

Based on Summersm post, I think I agree. I hope he follows through on it. See, that's all I really wanted.

The only people I wouldn't really trust are the members of the City Council. Some of them care about the city but then there are more than a few who only care about politics. Seeing the glowing, positive PhillyMag (or maybe it was CityPaper) piece on Darell Clarke made me sick. It seems to be the (easy, lazy) popular thing to do these days is to scapegoat Nutter and talk like anything different from him would be a positive or like everything he does is a mistake.

Ah, here it is: http://www.phillymag.com/articles/da...ichael-nutter/

What most annoys me is that despite the way he has basically bent over backwards for newcomers (at the expense of long-time Philly people), those newcomers always act like he has either done nothing for them or bent over backwards for others at their expense whenever he does something they don't like. That was my whole problem with some of the posts on this thread. They showed a clear lack of perspective.

Just remember that it will be a long, long process. I'm happy to see they are taking the steps to already begin this, but it also hinges upon him getting other political bodies to collaborate. I love his enthusiasm about everything, though.

Hahaha you seemed generally upset by this whole situation... I wanted to cheer you up

I also saw something about them taking properties back from dead beat developers via eminent domain after a certain amount of years (I believe 5) of sitting on undeveloped or vacant properties.

Also just recently saw something about commercial properties and that most of them will see a large reduction in property taxes (some up to 50% or more) thanks to AVI. This will make construction of new commercial space profitable in Philadelphia. The next two steps would then be to reduce the wage tax and the business privilege tax to attract new businesses. I will try to find this. Don't remember where I saw it.

Finally, Darrell Clarke has proposed a new bill that will generate decent revenue for the city that can help in the reduction of said business and wage taxes.

Quote:
City Council President Darrell Clarke today introduces his plan to place advertising on city-owned buildings and vehicles as a way of boosting revenue without boosting taxes. Clarke’s detailed plan to allows for city owned buildings like rec centers, and equipment like trash trucks, to run ads. He says a consulting firm hired by Council conservatively estimates that Philly could bring in $10 million a year:

Things are certainly changing in Philadelphia.

Perhaps Lincoln Steffens no longer holds true after all, eh?
