I'll take Nutter at his word that he means well and intends to fix this. But all the prior mayors who let this fester (Street, Rendell, Goode) should be hanging their heads in shame.
I agree. These investors apparently sit around until the neighborhoods become hot spots and THEN pay off the taxes. It is a win-win for them, because they scoop up these places for dirt cheap prices and don't bother to pay any taxes on them. If it becomes successful, they flip the properties for huge prices and pay off the relatively low taxes. If it doesn't become successful, they only lose a few hundred or so.

Nutter should have started it in his first term even. One could argue that it should have been a priority. This term though, he seems like he's really going after taxes in general. The momentum is with Nutter and the city in general.

I also agree. As far as I'm concerned the investors are the worst deadbeats of all. It's not sad as much as it's pathetic and disgusting.

As far as Nutter is concerned I really do hope that he keeps his word this time around.

I also agree with Mancat that previous mayors could have done something about this but didn't.

Everything we have hoped for

Quote:
A package of four bills aimed at reducing the property tax burden on Philadelphia homeowners and making it eaiser to bear are currently working their way through the Pennsylvania House. Taken together, the bills would give the City of Philadelphia additional power to collect delinquent taxes, allow city property taxes to be paid in installments, allow the city to take property owners’ age and financial need into account in determining eligibility for property tax relief, and amend the state Constitution to allow the city to set different tax rates for residential and commercial property.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter has appointed former head of Philadelphia Gas Works Tom Knudsen to serve as the city’s first chief collections officer, NBC Philadelphia reported. Knudsen was able to increase collections of gas bills at PGW so the city hopes he can do the same with tax deadbeats in the city.

^^Haha... exactly like I said from the beginning. Everything will be OKAY. The city is trying to rework the ENTIRE tax structure in order to lower businesses taxes to be more competitive and attractive to companies to get them BACK INTO the city limits.

Things are changing for the better.

People tend to greatly overreact before they see the final outcome.

In a democratic system, it's often pressure from that "overrreaction" that pushes things towards a more acceptable final outcome.

questioning authority = good

We're discussing this message board only, and certainly no one implied that questioning authority was "bad".
