Hi All,

We are a jewish family of 4 looking into the possibility of moving to Yardley PA. We are not overly religious at all, but would like some other jewish families around. Would anyone be able to let me know if this is a good town to live, and if there is an active jewish community in the area?

Thanks all for you help!

I am not that familiar with Yardley - which is a beautiful community, and not that far from the charming towns of New Hope and Doylestown - but a quick internet search has revealed it has a few Jewish congregations representing the Reconstructionist, Conservative, and Orthodox branches.

The Philadelphia metro area has the nation's 4th largest Jewish community, after NY, LA, and Miami-Ft. Lauderdale. It is the home of The Philadelphia Jewish Exponent newspaper and The National Museum Of American Jewish History. It's is my impression that Philly's large Jewish community migrated in '50's, '60's, and '70's mainly to "The Main Line" - those fashionable and affluent suburbs to the west: Bala Cynwyd, Ardmore, Haverford, Bryn Mawr, Radnor, etc. Jews who live in Philadelphia proper tend to live in such neighborhoods as Rittenhouse Square, Society Hill, Queen Village, the Art Museum area, and University City.

Wow thanks for the detailed information. If anyone has any first hand experience with the area that would be greatly appreciated. We are also looking in Newtown PA as well.

Thanks!

Check out this website - specifically the Bucks County section and the Bux-Mont section. This is the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia's website.

The Yardley Area (Lower/Upper Makefield and the Yardley Borough) along with nearby Northampton, New Hope, Solebury, and Newtown all have a sizeable concentration of affluent Jewish families, somewhere in the 10-15% vicinity. These have become the new "places to be" in Bucks County for Jews, as the Bensalem/Langhorne/Levittown areas, once the main centers of the Bucks County Jewish community, have lost their appeal. Pennsbury, New Hope-Solebury, and Council Rock are all great school districts, with Pennsbury being the most racially and socioeconomically diverse of the three.

One way to sense whether there is a sizable Jewish population is check out the school calendars and see if they are closed for the Jewish holidays. My kids went to Council Rock and the answer was yes.

As some other have responded there is a Jewish community in this area of Bucks. Most pronounced (actually would say very pronounced) in Newtown, Holland, and Richboro. All part of Council Rock schools which may be as much as 25-30% Jewish

That's a bit of an overestimate, though as I said before, there's certainly no shortage of Jews there.

Unless its significantly changed since my HS years I think the number is realistic. I spent many years living in this area
