Hi

Hubby just got a position in Ft Washington. We are looking into maybe moving (currently live in upstate NY - 2 1/2 hrs from Ft Washington) in a year or 2 if all goes well with the new job. Any suggestions on places to check out? We have 3 kids ages 12, 10 and 3. Looking into an area with good schools and good place to raise a family. budget no more then 350 000.

thanks!

Fort Washington itself is a great area but is generally expensive. FW is in the Upper Dublin School District which is very highly regarded. FW has a train station and the Turnpike entrance is there as well.

I will highly recommend Ambler, which in some ways in the quintessential small American town. It's 5 minutes from FW and there will be some nice homes in that price range. The homes in general may be smaller but there are lots of capes and split levels in the Ambler area at that price range. It sits in the Wissahickon School District which is highly regarded. Ambler has a nice little downtown, as well as a SEPTA train stop, and it's about 5 minutes from the Turnpike.

Here's the page on Ambler from the Classic Towns of Greater Philadelphia webpage.

You will be able to find a split-level or ranch in Blue Bell (Whitpain Township), also part of the Wissahickon School District. Another suggestion would be Horsham or Willow Grove but if it were me I'd move to Ambler before either of those 2 areas.

FW, Ambler, Horsham, and Willow Grove are all great areas to raise a family.

you may not get the house you are looking for in the immediate Ft Washington / Upper Dublin area on your budget. If you go a little north, real estate gets a little less expensive. check out surrounding areas such as Ambler, North Wales, Lansdale, and Horsham

I grew up right next to Ft. Washington, in Oreland. Very affordable homes, mostly older neighborhoods with a tiny "down town" area and train station. Flourtown is also close by, with a large shopping strip. Both areas go to Springfield Twp. schools, which are very good.

Follow route 309 N for ten miles or so -- communities on either side are good and mostly affordable, if you don't buy too new or too large.

I like using EveryHome to search -- you can easily search by school districts:
