Hi all -

I'm a 36 year-old single female relocating from the DC area to the Philly area. My family lives in South Jersey (where I grew up) but I'd prefer some city life and culture versus the Jersey 'burbs so would like to try out Philly life.

I discovered the Washington Square neighborhood (near the hospital) and like what I see so far. Really like the brownstones, local restaurants, etc. It seems relatively quiet..for a city anyway. Would anyone recommend this neighborhood for a single female in terms of safety? I'm past the late-night partying stage, so I won't be doing much of that...but still like to enjoy city life. And until I meet some friends, I likely won't be venturing out at night alone in the city. I would also consider Rittenhouse neighborhood - which is safer?

My other question is I have to have my car. My job requires alot of driving outside the city 3 days per week. How difficult is parking in this area? What is the cost for permitting?

Thanks all for any feedback you can give...

Yes, I would recommend it. Anywhere in Center City is pretty safe for a single woman, in my opinion. Beautiful neighborhood as well!

Both are as safe as they come. Both are great. If you want another great Center City neighborhood, check out Fitler Square

Try finding a rowhome with a garage. Some have garages in the back that can be accessed via an alley. Street parking is practically hell in Center City... you can also find a highrise with a parking garage if you want to live in a highrise. Nothing beats Center City though. Best place to be in the city.

Yeah, I don't have a car but I do live in a building that has a parking garage. It is an alternative. I wouldn't count on great parking here, so your best bet is to follow Summersm343's advice.

Anywhere in center city is going to be safe enough for your needs. University city is worth checking out too!

Since when are any of the places you mentioned in Center City?
