FYI - It's a 20 minute ride from Manayunk to Norristown.

The train takes 6 minutes to get from Norristown to Conshy and 13 minutes to get from Conshy to Manayunk so, OP, you could live anywhere along the line between Center City and Norristown and get to Norristown in 40 minutes or less.

Default Advice finding an apartment

What is the best way to find apartments in the area, other than realtor.com and some of the other sites. Thanks.

Here's a good site from Philadelphia Weekly, although it's probably mostly concentrated in the city.

Philadelphia Weekly Classifieds

I'd also check Philadelphia Real Estate, Philadelphia Housing, Real Estate in Philly - Philly.com.

Great - even better for the OP than what I said.

Like others have said Manayunk or Conshohocken.

If you want an apartment building with on site amenities like laundry, gym, bar, pool, etc. I would look at the apartments along Henry Avenue in Roxborough. Summit Park, Henry on the Park, etc. Some have free shuttle service to Manayunk.
