I've yet to find a diner that's good for lunch or dinner (I've been to most of them), but McGillin's is one of my favorite places in the city ... as long as I get a seat at the bar. Excellent wings and great chili nachos.
My three worst breakfasts have been the three times I went to the Oregon.

Seriously though, you can at plenty of "nice" places in the city for under $50 for two people provided you don't order drinks. If you want to seriously eat cheap and well, check out Penang in Chinatown. Two people can walk away stuffed for under $20 and have some leftover to take home as well, and the food is excellent if you're into Southeast Asian cuisine. As for pizza, check out La Fourno on South St. You can get a very good artisanal personal pizza for about $10-$12 that easily makes a meal. These are the real deal too, not some greasy slice from Lorenzo's (although those are awesome too). You can get one made with just about anything on it. The artichoke and prosciutto quattro gusti pizza is my personal favorite. They also have great pasta as well. You should be able to get a great meal for under $30 there, again, provided you don't order drinks.

There's a lot of places like this in the city. These are just two of my favorites.
HA! It doesn't have to be "nice" ... I've have heard good things about La Fourno and Penang sounds like a good option. Thanks.
I used that price point because we eat fantastic Korean bbq at Kim's in Olney and that's around what our check comes to.

If you want a good breakfast check out the "Green Eggs Cafe". The newest one is in Midtown, but they also have one in South Philly. Have you been to Four Seasons Diner at Cottman and the Blvd? Great food and ultra cheap. They give so much most end up taking some home with them.

That should be easy enough. What kind of food are you thinking of? Is she a fancy girl or down to earth?

I've been to the Four Seasons quite a few times - had some good meals and some bad meals. One of the worst burgers I ever had.
I've heard good things about the Green Eggs Cafe, I'll have to check it out.

I may be able to suggest a few pizza joints where you can eat for $55. One topping only though.

I love BBQ, and my two favorite places are Fette Sau (NoLibs area) and Percy Street BBQ (South Street), with Fette Sau being slightly better. Like others have said, as long as you don't get drinks then the bill will be under $55. If you spend a little bit more, say $65-70, both of you can enjoy a really good meal at Osteria. It's an Italian place known for its pizza and pastas and was featured on the Food Network for its pizza, but it also has really good meat entrees. In particular, the roast pig is to die for, they give you a cut of the shoulder, the tenderloin, rib, and a crispy piece of skin. I love that place, great atmosphere and good crowd. I've only been twice and have gotten the pig special each time and it was excellent. Also good is the rabbit. The side of kale is literally the best kale I've ever had. My Dad was raving about it and he rarely ate vegetables a year ago.
