Hi,

I am moving into Philadelphia and the last time I rented here, when I filled out an application, the leasing agent told me to just black out my bank account numbers on the app because legally they could ask for them but I did not have to provide them if I did not want to. Since that time, I have been the victim of identity theft and nearly had my bank account drained of every last penny, so this time around, I do not want to provide my bank info to ANYONE and will never pay rent with a check again, only with a money order and receipt signed by the landlord.

My question is, is it true that I do not legally have to provide my bank account numbers? I have no problem printing out my current day bank statement and handing it to the landlord, provided I can black out the numbers.

Secondly, I just finished getting my free credit reports and scores and they are in great shape. I am wondering if landlords use one or all of the three credit bureaus to check your credit or is there some top-secret landlord-only credit bureau they use instead. I want to make sure that the great info I have from Experian, Equifax & Transunion is what they are going to have when I apply. The reason I ask is because someone told me that landlords can access your bank account numbers when they check your credit report, but I do not see any of my bank numbers on all three of my reports.

Thanks!

PS: Please only respond if you are in Philadelphia - other cities/states rental info won't help me.

I am a small landlord in Philly, and I find it ridiculous that these landlords are asking you for your bank account numbers. Do not provide them unless you fully trust the landlord (and even then it is questionable). These numbers are not required to prove you can pay the rent.

Also landlords check a variety of credit bureaus and sources for credit/financial information about a tenant, but as you said the account numbers are not listed in full on those reports.
