I believe I read an article in the Inquirer once announcing two new planned Wine & Spirits stores inside supermarkets in the region. Neither ever opened, mysteriously. One was supposed to be at the Clemens in Lansdale, which later was a Super Fresh but that since closed and now is empty, and one was supposed to be at The Fresh Grocer on Chestnut (the one in the hood, not the one in Center City on Walnut) which shockingly never opened despite The Fresh Grocer staying put all this time.

This came as a surprise to me so I looked it up. Store Locator :: The Fresh Grocer
Are you talking about the one I see listed in the Adams 4 shopping center on 4th street? That is one of the most ghetto parts of Wilmington (and I'm not knocking Wilmington). Aggressive panhandlers, drug trafficking, right under the I-95 overpasses.

Maybe you're associating it with the redeveloped waterfront area and lower Market streets that are a few blocks away? Adams 4 is pretty far removed from those areas, economically and even geographically. Nobody goes down there unless they live around there. And the thing about lower Market street is that the redevelopment does not extend much to the east and west of those few blocks. It's getting better every year and I love the direction Wilmington is going in, but make no mistake - 5 blocks away to the west is a fairly bad neighborhood. Even 2 blocks to the west is not so hot, though there are some great old rowhouses in there, and I'd love to see it become a nice residential neighborhood.
