Any general info on the police dept? I heard that they got issues with underfunding, understaffing, adequate training and morale, similar to NYPD and other big city depts. They are almost always hiring so is there high turnover? I will start applying to different police depts soon so this could help.

They are paid much less than suburban departments, at least starting out. Also they keep arresting the same dirt bags over and over and the judges turn them loose so that must impact morale. That being said they always seem to get their man.
I would think they are the employer of last resort when it comes to LEO's. It's been awhile but I worked a P/t job that employed a lot of younger Philly cops because it had very flexible hours and they needed the money to make ends meet.

What are LEO's? I thought if you want to be a philly cop you have to have at least 60 college credits or at least served in the military?

LEO = Law Enforcement Officer
I am not sure of Philly requirements but 19 out of 20 departments do require some college credit, usually law enforcement related from a community college and occasionally a BS.

I believe in Philly, an applicant must either have an associates degree or be former military.

I don't think the suburban police departments hire as much as the philadelphia police department. Do you live in North Jersey, why don't you work there? And I always thought you had to live in Philadelphia for a year to be a cop here.

i think that used to be true, but they wised up and dropped that requirement
north jersey is not hiring at all, matta fact the only dept in the whole nyc metro area thats hiring is the nypd and their wait list is like 3 yrs

I have heard LEO's say it is better to work anywhere for a year or two and get experience and then try to transfer. I think that is the path to a suburban dept. for many. Governments are cutting back in New Jersey and Long Island, don't know about Westchester. Yonkers used to be an easy one but circumstances change.
