looooooool at Penn being on the list. I'm sorry, but Penn is not dangerous whatsoever. How is Penn going to be on the list but not Drexel?

It's probably largely based on crimes in surrounding neighborhoods. I agree Penn isn't dangerous for the most part, but as I've said before, freaky things occasionally happen (such as my friends getting caught in gang crossfire near Allegro's). I still don't think there's any reason to be scared on a day-to-day basis, but it ain't Haverford or Swarthmore either. Just exercise street smarts and you'll more than likely be aye-ok.

Indeed, but Allegro is sort of on the fringe of the campus, wouldn't you say? The heart of the campus--36th around Walnut/Spruce--is, I imagine, not dangerous in the least. If we're arguing off-campus housing for students, then MAYBE I would agree that there is a possibility of something sketchy happening to an actual degree that would cause someone anxiety, but elsewhere, I would say no.

There are indeed public schools in Philly that are very good...and a few, including the ones mentioned in your initial link, that are doing rather poorly.

Regarding the first list again, I'll admit to being surprised that Penn, Harvard and UCSB were on the list. I doubt that this will deter people from applying to either of those Ivy League schools if not also the generally upscale Santa Barbara area.

It was a bit puzzling why the stats mixed high schools and colleges, though.

Even the heart of campus occasionally has things going on that wouldn't happen in most suburban or rural campuses. Again, I'm not suggesting that Penn is truly dangerous, but it is one among relatively few super-high density urban universities. Nothing's ever happened to me personally (and other than that one close call with those friends I don't know of any real scares among my circle of acquaintances) but occasionally if I'm walking alone late, late at night when the campus is deserted, I feel slightly uneasy--never truly scared--but I make sure to keep my guard up.

Yes, that is probably for the best, HeavenWood. My fiancee also goes to Penn, so we're usually walking together. We're not doing it for precaution, but I'm happy if it helps in the avoidance of criminal action.

Wouldn't that be for precaution though? There's nothing unreasonable about not wanting to walk alone on Penn's campus very late at night, especially if you're female.
