Looking at a map, my guess is that it's going to be harder NOT to take the Schuylkill. I would try like heck to make appointments at like 11 am if possible so you can drive during non-rush hours. I would not do it without a GPS or a smart phone with audio directions since you are not familiar with the area. I really like to take the train in to Philadelphia any more because I also don't like to drive on the Schuylkill either, but if the day is going to be stressful medical treatments, figuring out the public transportation might be even worse.

It's not at all difficult; I guess I need to go work for your local AAA. Your best bet is to take 276 to the midcounty exchange in Plymouth Meeting, then 476 south to St Davids exit. Take 30 east right through the main line and eventually you'll hit 38th street in West Philly. Take 38th south and you'll hit HUP. This is a trade-off of time and convenience for comfort. Midcounty can be a little stressful if you don't know where you're going so study a map and use Google street view first.
