For some reason MSN slideshows aren't working on my computer anymore. On msn.com there's a slide show this morning of the 10 best cities to retire to without wheels. The accompanying article says they left out NYC, DC and SF because most seniors need to live in less expensive places. If Philly is on the list, can someone tell me what it says about the city, please? Thanks.

It's number 2

Last year, AARP named the City of Brotherly Love as one of its "Great Places to Retire for the City Life." The city life can get expensive, but the cost of living in Philadelphia is lower than in many cities, and seniors ride free on all public transportation in the state, thanks to a program through the Pennsylvania lottery. The metro area's Southeastern Public Transportation Authority was recognized with an Outstanding Public Transportation System Award by the American Public Transportation Association last year.

Are "seniors" 65+ for free transportation? Did you check the MSN slideshow? I'm an AARP member and I remember their rankings.

Columbia - I can vouch for this. My partner and I were looking for a place to retire from auto-centric Houston. We explored several cities on both coasts and landed in Philly, for a variety of reasons. One of them was that we could live easily "without a car." I put without a car in quotes because we held onto one car. I do take it out once a week to volunteer at a place about 8 miles from where we live. Many weeks, that is the only time the car gets moved. Other than that, we take care of all needs by foot: groceries, dining, entertainment, social and medical. It's great to say goodbye to traffic.

We thought about getting rid of our car, but since we can afford it, hold onto it for spontaneous get-aways and to visit relatives who live a few hours away. Zipcar is an option for occasional car use here if someone wants to go completely carless here.

Regardless of whether MSN's current slide show lists Philly, I know from other articles that what y'all are saying is true. I'm ready to rent my house out and pack up a U-Haul. My partner thinks we need to spend money to come check it out first. I operate on adrenaline when I'm ready to do something. He's more methodical.

I got the slide show to work for one slide. I don't want to move to Oxford, Mississippi.

But not Philadelphia? Just curious. I don't have any notion that I'd like to move to Pittsburgh. My notions are mine only, though, so no offense to any Pittsburgh-lovers.
